I got my cam in just not sure which stuff to use to break the cam in.When I bought the cam I bought some crane cams superlube break in concentrate. And I bought some Gm eos a while back.Which one would be better to use?

How's about BOTH--super-lube glopped on cam/lifters & EOS in crankcase...

both is ok. when i did mine (comp) i used comps cam brake in lube with good oil and thats it. i run a bottle of additive with ever oil change

Yeah I loaded the cam down with the edlebrock break in lube it came with. What kind of additive do you run on your oil changes?Yeah I think I am gong to run the crane stuff for break in and run the eos after break in for regular use.How much eos should I use when I change my oil after break in?Should I soak my lifters in the eos are regular oil before I install them?Thanx for the replies.

First soak the lifters in Laquer Thinner for a few days. I like to Plunge them down now & then with a pushrod & get it circulated real good. Then dry them & put them in an oil bath or EOS & do the same with the pushrod again a few times. I would add the EOS to the oil at breakin as thats when its most important. If you use a good oil then after breakin its not really needed but I like to add a bottle the first oil change anyways & maybe the 2nd as well.

I used just EOS on several flat tappet cammed motors and never ever lost a lobe on any cams.

i used break in lube and stp oil treatment. then stp and rotella with all oil changes. took motor apart 2 times for head gasket and head porting and the cam and lifters look brand new

The edlebrock instructions says not to pump the lifters up???????Would it mess anything up pumping the lifters up.This is the first cam I ever done.Got the cam in just got to put the lifters and intake on.

I dont call that pumping them up when it laquer thinner getting squeezed in & out for cleaning purposes & a good shot of air to dry them. If they say that then dont do the oil step afterwards, but I have done it with GM, Sealed Power & Erson?? Always worked for me plus you find sticky lifters that way. I have found only a few that were sticky but after that they were fine???
Also when you tighten them on the heads before the intake you can see which are harder to compress also. Found 1 Roller set like that & it needed extra attention. Little details are important for a good running motor. Just check them all & the Laquer is a Must IMO. They still need to soak in oil before the install no matter what. Pumped up or not.

Thanx I will deffinately do the laquer thinner.Yes every tip will deffinately help me out.

I recently was talking to a engine builder who's been doing it for a long time . he swears by thin coating the hyd flat tappet cam lobes and the bottom of the lifters in the ARP moly lube (the stuff that comes with the bolts/studs) .says it's the same stuff as cam break-in molly paste and just throws in a bottle of GM EOS on start up .breaks in the cam , drains oil and replaces with fresh oil and another bottle of EOS . says he's never had a cam fail with this method .

After you soak the lifters in thinnier take them apart and empty thm. Then re-assemble them for the oil soak. You won't contaminate the oil you soak them in then.

i use one bottle of comp cams engine breakin every oil change. this is what my builder told me to do.

I've had good luck with both the Comp Cams # 159 and the Crane Cams # 99003-1. Either will do the job well.

I forgot to mention that. I wipe the oil off the bottom & use assembly lube as I put it together. Never wiped a cam but only broke in 3 so not that many really. Always has worked for me. 2 Erson & 1 Reeds

Stopped by a GM dealer today for other reasons and inquired about the EOS.The parts guy claimed that they changed around the formula and not sure if Zinc is in the mixture anymore.Oh BTW ,he also gave me the new price of $22.95 a bottle:eek: Anyone heard of this before??
