Can fuel pressure regulator be changed without removing fuel rail?

I want to change my fuel pressure regulator but I'm not sure I could get the o-ring back in with the fuel rail on the car. Is this possible? Is there any tricks to getting it in?
 
I remember changing the fuel regulator as being a quick 5 minute swap.

If my memory is correct, there is no need to remove the fuel rail.

Be sure to release any fuel pressure.

Quite easy to remove.

Releave fuel pressure

USING A LINE WRENCH, unfasten the return line at the bottom of the regulator.

Remove two holding bolts on the side.

Pull regulator out of fuel rail. Make sure O ring comes out with it.
 
A five min job can turn into a disaster trust me.
lube oring before install to fuel rail.
hand tighten reg to fuel line first to eliminate stripping threads.
 
Ya and make sure you have the correct size O-ring (brown for fuel) before the attempt.
 
I pulled it off with no problem - putting it back on - not easy! I can't get the o-ring and everything back in - even using the 2 mounting screws to help press it in. What is the trick to this? It looks like the o-ring and the plastic ring behind it should go into the fuel rail.

My Accufab regulator does not use the plastic ring, is your stock? Loosely make up the threaded fitting first, push in the regulator as far as you can by hand, then do the bolts, then finish tightening the fitting.

Mine is a stock look alike adj. regulator. I tried what you described but it does not go in. The ears on the reg. actually start to bend rather than seating the o-ring.
 
Start the treads in the return line to the reg then bolt it to the rail sometimes it works like a charm others it a b***h lol easy project though
 
Check the hole for any debris. Then try a fuel injector o ring and lube it with liquid hand soap on the o-ring and the inside of the rail. Hope you did like Rick said and disconnected the battery or you will look like Fire Marshal Bill!:eek:

X2! Thread the bottom fitting (return line) in loosely so you can still wiggle the Regulator to line up the 2 bolt holes. use "O" ring lube and make sure you go straight in with it. Tighten up the fuel rail bolts evenly (one turn at a time)to pull it onto fuel rail once you are sure it going in straight. Tighten up the return line last. I nicked at least 2 "O" rings changing mine out until I did it this way. :mad:
 
Good advice. That's the first mistake I made when I had my first TR in the mid 90's. I stripped the fuel line fitting and had to replace the line. My mom wasn't too happy when her car had to sit outside the garage for a few days while I waited for the part to arrive.
 
Yes - I disconnected the battery!

I did start the fuel line first, then I started the 2 mounting screws. I did not use soap. Sounds like a good idea! I will try again tonight with soap and easing the mounting screws in. I didn't think to look before I removed it, but is the plastic ring behind the o-ring visible when the regulator is fully seated?
 
The soap did it! Put a light film of soap on the o-ring and the opening on the fuel rail - went in with ease!
