Can you tell that a USED motor/trans is stolen?

I'm looking to buy this GN motor w/ trans, but I wanted to be confident knowing that the damn thing isn't hot. It's a waste of my time dealing with stolen goods. Last thing I need is to go to jail buying my parts from my stolen GN a year ago.

The motor should have a vin on it, as for the trans i don't believe they stamp them.
Odds are its stolen unless he shows you a title from where the motor came from or the shell.
