Carriage bolts to mount bumpers instead of plate?

Has anyone considered using carriage bolts to bolt the bumper to the frame? I know that the original plate fastener (not sure what its called) is plastic, flexible and does not provide any support for tightening up the frame to resist twisting. I wondered if carriage bolts/nuts would help fasten it tightly. If you got the correct size to fit the square portion of the bolt into the bumper support, i would imagine it would prevent movement. Has anyone tried this, or am I blowing smoke?

It sounds like your bumper supports are not stock. The stock bumper is steel, along with the bumper brace (some are aluminum). Then steel bumper mounts (brace to frame) that are compress-able in the event of a hit.

There are export braces/mounts that take the place of the brace. But they too should be steel.

There are also bumper mounts in aluminum (aftermarket), that don't compress.

Not sure what you have. Can post pic's? Maybe a fiberglass front bumper (would be aftermarket)?

I have used carriage bolts. Tough to get all 8 aligned but has worked. You also need star washer/ compression washer to hold carriage bolts in place until you get nuts started.

Mine is original. What I am saying is simply removing the plastic fastener that has the four studs built into it and using 4 carriage bolts in place of that. The washers that would normally hold that plate on the reinforcement are still available from gm so you could use those to hold each carriage bolt in, assuming you got the same bolt size. Its just an idea since I figured that plastic probably doesnt provide any support really.

Right, I think there are carriage bolts under the rub strip if I remember correctly. Maybe 6? If we're talking about the isolators (the compressible shocks that mount from the reinforcement to the frame), those fasten to the frame end flange with 3 bolt/nuts each, 13mm heads.

The insert that is held ontobthe bumper reinforcement is plastic eith four metal studs built into it. If you dont have that, yours is not original.

Sounds like you are thinking of the bumper to bumper reinforcement bolts. I am referring to where the reinforfementvattaches to the bumper shocks.

This is not a great shot but you should be able to see how mine bolts up. There is a big shim that goes between the reinforcement and the isolator. But now that I have seen the dogbone plate, I am sure that is what mine has also.
