Changing filter

I'm changing filter and fluid in my 87 gn and have a question. The seal at the top of the old filter looks different than the new one. It's stuck in the bore as I expected but it isn't an o ring like the new one. It's a wider orange rubber seal. There wasn't an O ring on the old filter when I removed it so I'm wondering if I should remove the orange seal. Any suggestions?

Remove the orange seal. It's a standard stock seal. Make sure you don't score the bore.
