Need some help. I have just finished installing a cruise control system from a TR into my Hybrid, and it is not working. I have checked the ground and power, as well as the brake switch connections. Is there anything that typically fails in the CC systen that I should look for. Module, servo, stalk switch?

Paul

Stalk switch can fail easily. Cheap solid wires.

Do you get anything like the cruise light on at least?

I made a box with switches to simulate the stalk as a test unit, works well. I am putting a new stalk in the GN tonight I hope.

Hopefully you have the wiring diagram and troubleshooting tree?

Got the stalk from the wreckers, so it could be in question.
No cruise light on, but I can hear the servo switching when I push the stalk lever.
I got a wiring diagram from the big site (hard to read), but do not have a trouble shooting tree. Do you have a copy of the wiring diagram and tree that you could send me?

Thanks
Paul

No scanner at home.

I will post some switch testing you can do to determine if the stalk is good tonight. I will include the colors and what switch to use with an ohmmeter.

Or I can send ya my test box when I'm done with it. :)

Okay first test. Use a VOLTMETER not the ohm meter part yet.

1. At the cruise module left unplugged for now check the following wires in the connector. Key on.
Cruise switch 'ON' gray wire in terminal A should have 12 volts read to a good ground.

2. Key ON. Cruise switch 'ON' Set switch 'ON' held in you should get a 12 volt signal on the dark blue wire terminal L of the connector.

3. Key ON. Cruise switch 'ON' and the Resume switch 'ON' held in you should get 12 volts on the gray wire with black stripe in terminal M.

Let me know if you have these signals.

Everything passed with the first tests. I can hear the servo switch, but I do not get an on indicator light.

Paul

Yup!

White wire terminal B of the connector to the module. TAKE OFF THE CONNECTOR to the module and put a ground on it. The dash light should come on through the gages fuse +12 powered with the key on run, bulb test and start positions.

What dash are you using? How did you wire the cruise light now that I am thinking about this LOL.

Going to work on my car for a bit I will check back soon.

Lots of troubleshooting to do. You must be over 25mph for the system to work also. Make sure that happens.

Terminal J of the module is the ground, make sure it is good. :)

To quote Judge Smails in Caddyshack, "Well we're waiting...." :)

Put the new Kirbans Cruise Control Stalk in the car just now and it kinda is a POS. Switch action for the cruise portion sucks, haven't tested it to see if it does the job yet. Getting it in there wasn't too easy either.

My cheap $20 National Autoparts stalk had better switch action but doesn't look quite as nice as the Kirban model. I'll take the proper switch action anyday. :)

Gotta do the low fuel lightbulb now. Be back soon! Get to work on that cruise control!!! ;)

Thanks salvageV6.
A bunch of TR guys are getting together this afternoon, to meet with Jay Carter, (kinda a tech day) so I will have to wait until later today to get back underneath the dash.

I have the stock Toyota dash, with all the guages and tach are adapted to the 3.8. (That includes the VSS ) For a indicator light, I am using my disfunctional "fasten seat belt" light. I don't have a diagnostic check bulb test. Dang hybrid ;)

I will check in later.

Paul

Not sure how that bulb is wired but this is how it should be done.

Keyed power on one side of the lamp +12 volts from IGN. or Gages fuse.

The module wire B should go directly to the other side of the lamp and the module should provide the ground path when the cruise module is operational. White wire if you followed the modules original color code.

Back to my low fuel lamp. :D

Thanks for all your help salvageV6, I got it working :)
A quick dumb question for you. Since most of the markings are worn off on the stalk control, is this correct...
Button on the end is SET
Switch is
(far left) OFF
(middle) ON
(far right) Resume?

Paul

Hey Salvagev6, maybe you can answer this: Is there a cruise indicator lite on my dash? It is an 86 with digital dash. I ask cause my cruise dos not work also so I am going to begin troubleshooting using your tests below. Thanks

paul

Paul you have the switch names correct. :) Good to hear you gots it working.

Paul the '86 digital dash should have the cruise lamp light up in green print. It is on the right side lamp pod all the way to the bottom, below the blinker lamp.

I would check the brake switch first as that was what was wrong with my car, well the shorted stalk switch too....

PS: You can't add a low fuel indicator lamp to a digital dash car. Don't ask me how I learned this...

Salvagev6, I will check the brake switch first. I checked the pin connections on the servo for the correct resistence and that was ok. I need to know how to check the VSS signal to see if that is working, can you help?
Where is the cruise control module in case I have to check those connections?

paul

My last post was addresssed to Salvagev6 but in case he is unavailable can someone answer these two questions:

I need to know how to check the VSS signal to see if that is working, can you help?
Where is the "cruise control module" in case I have to check those connections?

paul

Paul I'd have to read about the VSS. I also wouldn't start there first unless you really suspect a problem with it???

Cruise module is on the right side of the steering column towards the radio pod. It hooks upwards vertically with one connector sticking out of it with 8-10 wires on it. Colors should be as noted above in the previous discussion.

Just push down on the metal tab and it will release so you can work on it. Not too hard to find.

Black plastic box about 3/4" thick and about 3" x 4" rectangle.
