At what HP level / 1/4 mile time is the D5 2800 restall no longer effective?
When should a 10in. 2800 stall be considered?
Thank you for the help.

Converter selection is dependent on many factors such as use of the car, the engine build combination and certainly the turbo.

Generally any turbo upgrade needs a better than stock converter, and a higher stall will even help with a stock turbo as I can run in the 12's with my original car that never yet had the valve covers removed!

you can run a D5 effectively to mid 11's .. they work very well even with a 44 or 49

I've run the D5 down into the 11.20 range @ 117 ish ... they are actually a well built unit

When I started running under 11.50 with my stock stall d5 It started breaking fins in the turbine section of the converter and I would see this as a small increase in the stall speed of the converter and I went through 3 or 4 converters do this and lock up clutch failures at this power level.

If you have enough power to run faster than 12 oh's regulary you start looking into a good trans and coverter

Thanks for the info.
I need to figure out adding a sig thing.
I have had a ta49 on the car since '92 along with a 3in. dp, good exhaust and CIA. I have run 12.40's at 113 mph in the 1/4 back in the day.
I'm installing comp 980's, going back to an in tank pump, 60lb injectors, TT chip, scanmaster, precision plenum w/PP and have a 2800 restalled d5 to be installed.
I would like to add a stretched SLIC and maybe a TA58 dbb turbo at some point as well (when the TA49 wears out).
It's mainly a street car with pro touring and autocross tendencies and won't see much track time, people make fun of me because I launch flat and have such a high ET & fast MPH. Lol
I have been reading posts about driving over the converter and wondered at what level this is happening.
I was wondering if it was worthwhile to put the restalled d5 in or just get a PTC 2800 stall.
It looks like I will be ok for a while yet.
Thanks again.

The 12" D5 won't be a real 2800. Maybe a 2200 if it's built correctly. If you need more rpm on the starting line to help launch, a 2800 stall 10" will help.

Thank you for the answers. It's nice to know what to expect.
By the time I need a new converter, I will need a new Trans as well.

At what point is it good to go to a 10"? Asap as far as I'm concerned. If you can afford it you will wonder why you goofed with the restalled stocker for so long.
One of the first mods mine got way back was an art carr 9".
It will be like a whole new car. You will love it .

A restalled D5 which gets you about 2200 stall is good for a turbo like a TE-44 or TA-49. Anything larger than that and people usually start wanting a faster spool-up. The proper 10" gets you that extra rpm. The 10" can have as little as 2400 stall or as much as 3400, depending on configuration.
