Gas Tank Area

Here's the picture I used to restore the rearend. When there's a low mileage GNX's on ebay, you usually get some good photos too.

Is the fuel tank supposed to be black or silver? I think there has been some debate about this. Which one is factory accurate?

My 86 GN also came with a black tank. The weird part is that only the bottom half was painted. The top half natural. And IIRC those foil insulators on the bottom and under the filler neck weren't painted either. Kind of like the tank was painted before it was put together. But of course it doesn't look like that now. I bought a new set of GM straps, left them natural, repainted the entire tank,Armour-All'd the insulators so now it looks like Lou's GNX. I'll have to dig up pics of my 455 Regal. I did a frame off when I swapped in the 455. The car was intended to remain in it's Platinum Gray factory color and with the bottom of the floor pan painted gray it's a striking offset against the black epoxy frame and suspension and stainless steel fuel and brake lines.

Painting

From my research, gas tanks got accidently oversprayed with black paint and/or undercoating. For the many low mileage cars I have seen, the gas tank was aluminum in color.

When I restored my tank, I used paint stripped and steel pads and basically scrapped everything off. I then lightly wet sanded it, and added new rubber straps when mounting. Of course a good time to change out the pump too.

I'll post a pic of it this weekend. Don't have a great shot.

Here's my undercarrige.

And how exactly did the tank get overspray? The gas tank was usually one of the last items installed after the tub was married to the frame.

I've done some very extensive research on the assembly process of the Pontiac MI built G-Bodies. Someday I'll get it finalized and post it here or someplace. But I would really like to find a copy of the Regal Assembly Manual before I start stating facts about it.:)

Personally I think who ever built these tanks for GM just painted them for the heck of it.:)

Same as the top side. If it's a GN than black with out a clear coat is what it's supposed to have. The firewall was clear coated on the 87. There was also a number written in crayon on the firewall.

Mothers

My firewall paint looked dead. I was going to have it painted, and I decided to degreased it, and treat it like I would clean the paint outside my car. Started with clay bar etc. Take a look.... That's not fresh paint! :)

Another good tip is to get silcone spray, and spray your inner fender liners. Professional body suppliers and car products stores carry it. You won't find the right type in basic autostores..

my 86 Gn and my 86 TType both have black tanks. Top and bottom. The rear axle seems to have been painted black (half-a$$ed) because it's all faded now.
