Anyone use the atkins diet? What do you have to do for it to work, what do you eat and not eat?

i will refer you to an older post where i told an other member that if he started to atkins diet i would fly out and kick him in the nuts!

simlpy put its not an effective (or safe) way to lose weight and keep it off. the only way the atkins diet is effective or safe is under strict doctor supervision. the low carb diet where developed for severly overweight subjects that had no alternative but to lose weight fast to get their weight to a level where they were semi out of the danger zone.

blah...............

GRRRRRR i am gunna step off my soap box, maybe John (superman) will get on his, he likes his soap box more then i like mine.

I really wouldn't recommend that diet. If you want to lose weight, excercise is the key, but since you're asking about diets, I suppose you already figured that out.

So far, the diet that's worked the best for me is a vegan/vegetarian diet. It is actually very healthy, and you'll feel a lot better. It's hard to start, but once you do, it's really great.

I tried the Atkins diet once and it gave me gout from too much meat. It even said in the book this may happen! I have found that cutting out sugar and junk food 6 out of 7 days and working out 3-4 times a week works the best for me.Granted you wont lose a pound a day like this but it doesnt feel like you are depriving yourself and you can stick with it, which is the most important of all.:D

I just started looking at labels on food. If it was low in carbs, that is what I ate. I cut out bread, potatos, croutons, pasta, crackers, etc. Carbs, when you break it down, are sugar. You even have to watch the condiments (worchestershire sauce for meat is ok, oil/vinegar or balsamic vinegar alone for salads). Eat all the cheese you like. Get into salads. Eat eggs and bacon or sausage for dinner. It's pretty simple. I lost 20 lbs in 2 months. Too skinny for me and it wasn't worth trying to maintain; I was starving. I have been able to maintain my present weight of 192-195 for the last 4 years by just being conscious of what I do eat. You can cheat if you couple some exercise in to burn off excess calories like yard work and walking when you would otherwise ride.

mydesigner, with your question being so general, I would have to assume that you have just started thinking about any kind of diet. 1. figure out what the heck you want to do ie. how much weight or BF you want to lose. 2. Start to exercise ie. 45 mins cardio upon rising on an empty stomach. cardio means treadmill, recumbant bike, elliptical. Not jogging, or running either. If you decide on tradmill, a quick walk on a slight incline is best (3-4mph).3. join a gym and lift some weights. An Atkins type diet will work if you supplement for the deficiencies it causes in your diet. Exercise is the key to any diet, and Atkins will work, no need to badmouth it so much Grim.

Well right now I'm 6'0' and weigh 240 I want to get down to 190 to 200. Because 1) Im thinking about military and i got to get down to at least 199. 2)My pants are getting tight a year ago i was at 210.

I perfer the Seafood diet , i see food and i eat it .:D sorry i couldnt resist being corny . Go and exercise start lifting weights or do some cardio if you like that better . The more muscle you have the more calories your gonna burn . Plus if your going into the military being fit is a plus im sure . Im 6 foot and i was 235 not muscle before working out ,I leaned down to 175 at my lowest weight, ive been at it for about 6 years now and not to brag but im200lbs and pretty jacked ! Eat sensibly dont eat junk or gorge yourself in combo with exercise and you will lean out . Or go Arbuckle style ( Fatty Arbuckle ) that is and eat everything

I have also heard that it is not good for you.
I believe the best thing for you and your mind is MODERATE changes in diet and exercise. I think the worst thing we all do (and I am just as guilty) is eating too much at each meal, ie "stuffing" and then sitting because your body uses more energy on processing food and you don't feel like getting off the couch.

For those who don't yet exercise or diet:
Eat 20% less at each sitting, be somewhat selective about what you eat.
Walk 2 miles, especially immediately after dinner.

Never make drastic changes. Don't entirely dut out any food, especially ones you enjoy. Just regulate.

For those who already diet and exercise, 10% less, 10% more.

Make gradual changes and your mind and body will crave more exercise and you will begin to develop the mindset. It's getting over "the hump" that we never seem to do.

Bottom line if you want to loose wieght there is only one way to do it.
-eat less food
-exercise more
I know its a no brainer but there are ways of loosing the wieght fast depending on what you eat. There is a guy who ate whatever he wanted before 4pm after that he didnt eat anything and lost a ton of wieght. Even if he ate fast food he lost wieght because he was eating less. Another guy ate a cuban soup twice a day and a small dinner. the cuban soup contained amoung other things celery. Celery actually burns more calories being digested than it has. So Celery is a good thing to eat.

THere is a ton of wieghs but bottom line you ahve to eat less and work out more.

Here is a quick hint.
You pick you ideal body weight(lets say 200lbs)
So every day you would eat 200 grams of protien and divide it by 4 meals a day.
The you also eat half you ideal body weight in carbs(100 grams of carbs)
But no breads and pasta,You will loose weight and keep it off!

My on season weight around 295 lbs to 300lbs.off season weight around 275lbs.Power lifting/discus thrower/shot put.off now due to knee injury.

Exercise 40 minutes a day.
Cut down "fat" consumption"...say bye bye to shakes, hamburgers, french fries. I substituted 2 meals a day with slim fast shakes and ate sensibly for my 3rd meal. If you can sustain this for 5-6 days...take the 7th to have some fun and eat what you want. Oh...also eat lots of fruit/veges as a substitute for junk food when you feel hungry.

This has worked for me and I still can work out rigorously (weight training/running) 5-6 days a week. A belt I haven't worn (size 32) since 1982 almost fits :)

238 down to 221 (includes at least 5-6 lbs of muscle gain from training)

Newspaper story for september 2053...

"after 50 years of study it has been determined that eating healthy and exercising is the best way to loose weight".

Sorry had to do it. ;)

As has been said before, cut back on the sugars (drink diet soda if you love soda), cut back on the carbs (don't cut them out), eat 3 healthy well balanced meals a day, and exercise. You'd be surprised how much more energy you have after you start exercising. Just take it slow to start. there is nothing worse then getting on an exercise plan and burning out in the first couple of weeks.
