Is there any difference between the 2004R transmissions, in specific the 84-85 vs 86-87 models? I ask because my trans is on it's way out and Im looking at a rebuild or possibly a new unit. My dad who has owned both a hotair and intercooled and swears that the 86-87s shift way better than the hotairs and that its probably something in the tranny architecture. If that's the case, a new trans instead of a rebuild would be a better idea?

The Turbo Regals were equipped with the TurboHydramatic 350 from 1979 to 1984 and the THM200-4R from 1984-1987, The strongest and most sought after versions are the "BR" versions that were installed in the 1986/87 cars.
They had the unique BRF valve body (identifiable by the BR3 and pink paint on the valve body.) THM200-4R transmissions have an ID tag on them as shown in the following diagram:

Ah...why thankyou. I gave gnttype a quick browse but I guess I missed that. Thanks again!

That states that the the BRF ones have pink paint on the valve bodies, but I have pulled the pans off on two of my 85's that as far as I am aware have the original trannies in them as one of them is an all original car that had 40k miles on it when we bought it, and they both had pink paint on their valve bodies?

There is very little difference between the two. The governor circuits are even identical. With a recalibration kit installed on either (pending they werent hurt before installation) id bet you wouldnt even know which one was which.
