What exactly cuts out? The whole backlighting or the actual digital numbers?

So in guess its the backlighting of my gauges when I turn the headlights on. Wondering if there is a short somewhere

I had the same problem in my t type, the mph, fuel level etc all remained visible but when I turned headlamps on the black lights went out. I'm my situation I just replaced the headlamp switch and problem solved. It appears to me that the switch either had an internal short or high resistance, I don't know for sure but changing the switch worked for me. HTH

Not to insult your intelligent, but is it possible the light dimmer switch is turn down to the point when you turn the headlights on the backlighting also goes dim?

Haha nah I've messes with it, could be the dimmer switch itself?

Best thing to do is find a local TR buddy and just swap the headlight and dimmer switches out to see if that is the issue with it w/o having to shell out $ for new switches. If that does not fix it John at Casper's Electronics is the guru on digital dash repair.

Pull your dimmer switch out, clean it and regrease it and reinstall. Mine wouldn't act right and man was it cruddy in there. The reostat copper gets corroded.
