My brother-in-law was the sound engineer for them throughout the 80's and 90's. He has several Platinum/gold records on his walls. If you've ever seen the "tour" videos, he's the one that put the pig head in the toilet. He's also the one that whines when a bottle rocket blows up in his face. Anyway, I don't think he knows about this yet. I'll see if I can get some more inside info.

I bought an electric guitar a few years back. I thought I'd give it a shot and really learn how to play. Well lets just say some of us have "it" and others don't, cause I stunk and still stink. However my little brother(16yrs old now)took the guitar and he's been playing for two years, and is absolutely awesome. I've heard the name Dimebag Darrell from him, he's showed me Darrell's guitars online. And he watches and studies old pantera, and others dvd's watching these guys play. My bro is in school at the moment, and I thought of him the second I read this news. I highly doubt he has heard, and I'm not sure how he is going to take it. I was never big into heavy metal, until my bro started playing it. It gave me a whole new perspective of the music and what you are actually listening to. RIP Dimebag Darrell.

A short story I thought I'd share...

I am a guitarist also. I have been in bands since the late '70's. And Darrell was one of the best rock players in the history of rock music. Very under rated in my opinion. But most guitarists that have ever heard him will tell you the same thing I just did. He was phenomenal and will be missed.:(

Pantera came to Charlotte many times back in the 80's before they were really known & before they became the well-oiled machine they are now (were), but you knew all 4 musicians were at the top of their game. Over the years we've seen Darrell, Vinny, Rex, & Phil play up & down the East coast, but 1 idiot has taken away our chance of doing that ever again. Darrell's skill was only matched by a few other legends (Rhoads, Page, Van Halen, Hendrix) & together with his brother Vinny, with Rex, & with the main man Anselmo, they were 1 of the greatest metal bands of all time. It sucks how people are these days, but you just never know when it's going to happen. It's time we turn the knob up to 15 for a little "Cemetary Gates".

I'm an AHL season ticket holder and to get in every game we get frisked, searched and metal-detectored. All the facts aren't out there yet, but how could a guy walk in with gun?

I saw one story about how he might have blown by a bouncer and got it...

I have one of Darrell's old guitars under my bed in a case.I rarely ever play it.Mine is a "DimeSlime"(a very pretty bookmatched flame maple top with a green/yellow sunburst finish.

I rarely play it because it has a special signature in the spot where I would rest my arm.

It says Dimebag CFH '98,signed by the guy himself. His brother and him are/were two real nice guys.I idolized him back in high school. My freinds and I have met them plenty of times at their local nudie bar The Clubhouse.Real cool guys.

Rock on Darrell....may you rest in peace.

BTW,I will never put that guitar up for sale on EBAY trying to make a buck off of this tragedy.Shameful.

Anytime you just say when Mark.I would be happy to show it to you, even let you play it too.I know you would be careful with it.

yeah mark ive been playing for about eight years and always thought dimebag was amazing ,one of the best rock guitarists alive .
think im gonna go put on far beyond driving and blast it .

I am not embarrassed to say that i shed more than acouple of tears last night. When i have asked people to name the best metal guitarists of all time Dimebag is always the 1st or 2nd name to come out of peoples mouth. I am very proud to have seen Dimebag play live and be a fan on PanterA. Tonight i will consume several drinks in his honor. May you rest in peace Dimebag. Now for some Cowboys from Hell!!!!!

The best thing about Darrell, and Vinny Paul too, is they were just a couple of "regular" guys. they never got the bighead and always had time to talk to fans. Never acted like bigshots, like most other rock "gods". Darrell could play circles around 99% of any guitarists alive today.

Bummer

After the sadness comes the fact that he did inspire a number of people to play guitar, and countless people enjoyed his music.
It's not about how well you play. If you were inspired and enjoyed it even for a minute, I'm sure the guy would be happy.

That's what really counts in the end...

PS - DITTO about the "normal guy" post. It's nice to see people who didn't turn into arrogant jerks.

What watse of talent.... Some people have nothing better to do then to destroy other peoples lives. What a freaken shame!:(

Just showed on the local news a huge make-shift memorial outside his house here as fans gather and drop off cards/stuffed animals, etc in front of his house. His neighbors commented on how he was just another neighbor and always carried his own trash out to the curb and things and how they'd run into at the supermarket and he would be talking to fans as he was out grocery shopping.

I also remember them riding around in a bad azz 68 Camaro back in the late 80's too, and they even sponsored a NASCAR or BUSH series car a few years back.

Muther ****er, That sucks, He was one damn great player.Ill miss his stuff thats for sure

Pantera had a huge impact on my life. When I really think about it it's thanks to them I made the awesome friends I still have to this day. How I basically met them was from our love of Pantera. After they heard I was into the same music they were into, we became friends. Pantera was my biggest influence into the metal scene. Which got me into Slayer and much more at the time. My first Pantera CD was Far Beyond Driven. After one listen of that I was hooked instantly. I never listened to things before that made me wanna seriously break things and fill with that kind of energy. From that I moved back and bought Vulgar Display of Power , then Cowboys From Hell. After that I was buying up Slayer, Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse, you name it. I was metal for life!

Next Great Southern Trendkill comes out and I was all over it instantly. Another amazing recording. That's about when I started going to shows, every show I could. My first show ever was Pantera. One time I was leaving for Florida 5AM in the morning. The night before was Pantera at the Hammerstein Ballrom in NY and there was no way in hell I was going to miss this, no matter how hard the next day was going to be. They got up there and played for 2 hours, and that was probably the best show i've ever been to, along with the best show i'll probably ever get to go to. I wrecked in the pit, met alotta cool people. Got beer from Dimebag (He was tossin cups to people in the crowd). And my crowning moment, when Dimebag threw out his guitar pick and I managed to snag it! I still have it in a little box in my room.

After Pantera broke up i've been hoping that they would soon get back together. I knew it wouldn't happen soon but I hope they would just to get to see another show with them.

And I agree with many of you that Dimebag is one of, if not the, greatest guitarists i've ever had the pleasure of getting to listen play. He was a man of amazing talent. I have friends who play damn good that also praise him as the best.

I don't understand what Dimebag could have done to harm this guy in any way. As far as i'm concerned he was probably just some insane scumbag who figured it would be cool to go down as the guy who murdered someone from a major band.

If I could hope for anything out of all of this it is that someone bury's the gunner in a cemetery. If they can't afford it I would pay for it. Because I swear to god I would go there, invite every other person who feels like I do, and piss on his grave every single December 8th from here until I can't move anymore.

Sorry for the long one........ RIP :(

Now that's weird, this happened on the same exact day 24 years later after John Lennon was murdered...
