Can the slots that mate up to the sun shell tangs be repaired? Want to add material with mig welder and file to to make them right. This is the 3rd drum I have bought that doesn't meet the standard. First one has bad wear on bosses where the piston sits on the bottom. Second one has ring wear in bore. This one is worn on the tang edges as mentioned above. :(
Thanks again,
Joe

Tangs on sun shell measure 1.025 wide. How much larger than the tangs should the slot be?

Where are you sourcing these from? Used?

Not the only place to get one but for $30-40 shipped I doubt welding n filing is cost effective.

That isn't what he's looking for. The slots on the
Drums can be welded and reground. It's still easy enough to find decent drums that don't need this though. Beware of replacement drums sourced from online sites as remanufactured. The od is often turned excessively and will not work well with a high torque application

He said sun shell, nobody ever accused me of reading comprehension. Well then, I guess anything can be welded up and remachined into spec. I know my uncle has a place he uses in Fon Du Lac that spraywelds crankshft journals and gets them remachined on hard to find pieces.

I'd keep looking unless you or your welder are experienced. Good Luck.

My late model KTF had some wear on the drum tangs but I took a chance and went with it anyway since the ring bore showed no discernable wear . I went over it with a fine brake hone just to make sure . outside surface of the drum was in good shape . Might come back to bite me in the butt but since I'm not in a high horse situation maybe I'll get by .

I had to replace the input shaft and the overrun clutch housing ( moisture issue from junk yard storage ) . Got them from WIT and was pleased .

Thanks for the replies. This direct drum looks good other than the slots. Welding it is not an issue quality wise. I don't want the delays I'm experiencing because I can't get a decent part, so I thought I would solve the problem myself. I bought these parts from so-called reputable sources. This particular part came from same supplier a highly respected rebuilder in this area uses. Live and learn I guess. Still frustrating. I'll try one more before investing time welding and filing.
