I need to know about rebuilding my TA-49.

Cost for kit
do's and dont's
stuff like that

Started smoking at idle very bad after I turned the wick up to 20psi.:(

Oh, and could this also be a clogged return line?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Bo

Kit is $125 + shipping from John Craig. I have never rebuilt a turbo yet but theres a guide on Gnttype.

You can get the parts from John or other turbo vendors..getting it from John is nice because he is great tech help when you do something stupid..not that I've done so! ;)

I have done 3 or 4; here are a few things I have learned. If there has been any housing contact, send it in for a rebuild because it will need to be rebalanced. Otherwise, take it apart slowly, clean it up, and go to it. It isn't rocket science to just replace the bearings/bushings.

If you suspect your return may be bad, take it off and clean it up. Our stock drain line is a pretty well engineered piece and I've never seen one clogged badly on a decently maintained motor.

Thanks TQ :)

KendallF,

So you are pretty much saying that if I just have in and out play im good and if I have side to side play (touching the housing) I should get a professional rebuild?

I will check my turbo before anymore posting to see exactly what I'll have to do here.

Thanks Guys
Bo

Checked out turbo today and it has no in and out play but it has the up and down play (not touching though).Fins look in really good shape.

Is this just a seal or something?

Before you take the rotating assembly apart, mark the nut-to-shaft and compressor-to-shaft relationship to aid in the balance.

Could someone post the link for the "Turbo Rebuild Guid" at gnttype.org cause I cant find it.

thanks,
Bo:)
