Does the rear spoiler really do anything?

I know that may sound like a ricey question, but I was just wondering if anybody knew of evidence of the rear spoiler actually providing any degree of stability to the car? Has anybody noticed a difference between driving a car with and a car without a spoiler??

Just a question out of curiousity.

This should be moved to the Rice forum.....

NO difference,

um no.....there's not a spoiler on a street car tha does anything...it's all looks.

actually the greewood Vette spoilers do provide some degree of downforce and they dont sit high at all. this is b/c they are not just bolted to the trunk lid but are actually tied into the lower subframe.

I know mine provides at least 50lbs of downforce at low speeds. Then again a couple of cinder blocks in the trunk would do the exact same thing:D :D

At what speed? 65? NOT
at high speeds sure, that's why I said "street" car. Maybe I should have said "during normal driving - No"

sorry

I love the humorous replies to this thread. As I said before, I didn't mean to make this sound like a ricer question. Just wanted to know if anybody had any information about reduced lift or downforce from this spoiler.

I didn't think it had any affect at 65, so I guess I'll broaden the question to any speed. I forget I have no speed limits here.

I remember the old Impala's had a problem with 'lift' during hi speed chases because of the shape of the 'wings' in the back. So, it is possible that the spoiler has some affect.

Thanks for the replies.

I've seen T-Types with no spoiler and GN's with the spoiler doing 160 mph down the track. Evidently it doesn't help at those speeds. Now at 260 mph.....maybe. :D

spoiler envy

It gives the riceboyz something to be proud of.

You (after trouncing riceboy in a race): "Not a bad looking Accord, too bad it's soooo sloooooow!"

Him: Yeah..... well...... myspoilersbiggerthanyours...so there!

It's a new psychological condition known as "Spoiler Envy". Many TR owners suffer from it but live in denial.

With Regals being the models of aerodynamic efficiency that they are, it's going to take alot more than a little deck spoiler to help..........:D I'm thinkin about taking a screwdriver and 13 mm wrench and snagging the big aluminum top fuel wing off my neighbors Neon.............:p

Regals that went really fast had a lot more spoiler than the GN piece. Check out the uprights behind these NASCAR Regals. The Monte SS rear spoiler more closely emulated their NASCAR counterparts.

Yeah, they make a moving burnout look really cool by dragging the smoke cleanly behind the car. I learned this by doing before and after tests with my WO2 when I installed the GN spoiler. Watching a series of burnouts on club videos, I noticed that the Turbo T's burnouts didn't look as clean as GN's. I think the spoiler may actually smooth the airflow around the back of the car a little, but I doubt it would be any measurable difference. Your results may vary.

ya tru zam, the article said like 200 lbs or something at like 100 mph. and since its soo common to be at those speeds......

That's actually pretty interesting. I know it changes the airflow somewhat because the rear end (taillight section) stayed cleaner longer when I had my spoiler off for a short time. Not sure if this is a positive or negative or neither thing but it shows me the spoiler does something.

Remember guys, ole Chris here is over in Germany. He can go as fast as he wants.
