In my quest to save money it has come across that dsl is signifcantly cheaper than cable internet. it appears it is slower also. what is the difference between

Downstream Speed: Up to 3.0 Mbps
Upstream Speed: Up to 512 Kbps
IP Address: 1 Dynamic

and the almost 6 Mbps I am getting with cable.?
Is it worth paying twice as much?
will the three mbps stream movies and tv?

TIA

With DSL it's all about how far you are from the switchgear terminal (I know there's a better name for it). There is a practical limit of around 17k feet. When I got DSL back in the 90's, ATT was "hungry". They hooked me up even though I'm over 18k feet away and I managed to see 384k DL speeds for a long time. Then after a series of ATT SNAFU's, I could no longer get a connection and had to switch over to TWC roadrunner. Now I get consistent 18M DL's and 1M UL speeds for the same price. Around here, you can get the "slow" RR cheaper than DSL...

We have DSL at work and Cable at home. Not sure the quality of our DSL, but our cable at home blows it away!

It will be slower..... but, the price... I have it and it works for me.

Not sure how far away from the place though they say it is in my area according to the online thing where I put my address in. It also requires a phone line that I am not sure I have. It is a rental and we haven't ever had a landing. I will go out and see about the tip and rings are in the outside box. The provider has a diy self install kit but like I said I don't know if I have a phone line or I will have to run one. It is $19.95 a month.

The road runner time warner is $33.33 a month but you have to rent the modem so that ads and there is a $39.99 installation fee.

I am using ATT U-verse. It is $40.00 a month and the modem is included and is wireless so that is nice. Might just stay where I'm at with the almost 6mbps downloads that is very reliable in the year we have had it.

Thanks to those who answered and anyone else who has something to add feel free to post up.

If you have Uverse you dont have to worry about the distance. It should come in on the same line and be split out at the house since both ride copper from a terminal in you neighborhood. As far as speed, DSL is dedicated and not shared. Cable speeds depend on the number of users online in your area. So during heavy traffic times you may not see a difference or be a little fast with DSL. Is 3M the fastest they offer? Last I heard they had 15M available. Hope that helps

I have had DSL for the last few years with 6MB download that has been very good. My son works for Charter and i am getting 65MB service tomorrow and all of the movie channels and phone service for almost nothing. 65MB internet will be incredible!!
