I have an all stock GN that needs some minor exhaust work. I'm contemplating ripping it all out and putting in something that will help it breathe a bit. I've searched some previous threads and found ATR suggested, but see they are no longer in business. Any other suggestions for over the counter exhaust? Or should a guy just have it custom built? Any suggestions for the silencer/muffler? Headers?

Can a guy come straight back with a true dual exhaust off headers?

Will moving away from the stock exhaust require tuning on the front end? Thanks in advance.

ATR is a very nice unit but not available new, although you might find one in parts section, try posting to "Parts wanted"
I hear PYPES Pypes Performance Exhaust - Home Page is nice but
Stay away from flowmasters.
that was one of the first upgrades I did, so, no you do not need a bunch of others with it.

Why stay away from flowmaster I bought my car with them on it is there some thing I should know about them

What he said... and don't worry about headers the stock exhaust manifolds are good enough for cars well into the 11's

they arent boost friendly .hooker aerochamber and dynomax straight thru design are what i run

That's exactly why I took off my Flowmasters....of course, my late father had them put on when he owned the GN.....

But thanks to all of you guys opinion about Flowmaster operation, I did heed your advice and took mine off....went with RJC Racing 3"stainless steel set.

Never did think about non boost friendly, wish my Dad knew that....and I'm glad I do now, thanks to you.

I just installed the Pypes Race Pro mufflers on my car and they sound great. They are not too loud, no interior drone and are about as free flowing as no mufflers at all (considering you can look through one end and see out the other).
Because of the design of the headers on our cars for the turbo, No you can not run true duals from the header back. The headers are connected with the crossover pipe, then on an 86-87 car, the turbo mounts to the passenger side header, off the turbo is a down pipe which gets rid of the unwanted exhaust.
There are alot of great exhaust systems offered by supporting vendors of this site. Take a look at them also. (RJC, TR Custom Parts, etc.) These vendors have spent time on research and developement of a very nice free flowing systems.

That system Mark sells is nice stuff!

I personally have the hooker setup and consider it "stock quiet". My Dad's bone stock mazdaspeed 3 is considerably louder than my car with a 3in dp/gutted cat/hooker system. I honestly would like more noise... it even appears stock to almost everyone... Including the state trooper that pulled me over last night. ;) He said he didn't see me use my signal, I say he just wanted a better look at the car haha.

I also replaced the flowmaster system that came on the car with the hooker and saw a MAJOR improvement... the flows just dont flow on these cars.

Pypes, Buick GN, and Hooker are all very good choices. It just depends on what you want.

Your budget....

will probably dictate how much of a change you can make on your system. The stock headers are good into the 10's, replace them when they can no longer be repaired. they have a tendancy to crack between #3 & #5 cyl.
Go w/a THdownpipe design which will bolt right up to the turbo. purchase the test pipe at the same time, used in place of the cat. Then go w/one of the recommended exh/muffler combo's. then replace the stock air box w/a K&N filter to free up the breathing for a measurable increase in the seat-dyno. This will prepare you for the next round of mods, ie chip, injectors, turbo, etc. the cost=a lot$$$$
It never ends!

For the money you can't beat the Pypes Race Pro setup, I have it on my car and really love it. No drone at all, and you can feel the differance in power over the old Flowrestrictors I had on their. The system TR Custom parts sells is a real nice unit as well, but a little pricey for something that goes under your car and nobody is going to look at, nice and shinny. But over priced unless your car is a trailer queen. I drive mine.
