Just curious....

Does anyone know who first came up with the sjift light in race chips? What about "lean cruise"? Seems like everyone and their dog has those in their chips now but nobody says who originally came up with those.

I just think there are only so many things that you can make adjustable on a chip so in oder for us (the TR guys) to continue moving forward eventually this stuff is going to blend closer together.

I had a Principal once... He always used to give me detention though ;) :D

Hmmmm....

I have to agree with Steve on this one. Mike sounds like a big time hypocrite cause in the other thread he was bashing Red for stealing ideas with his new Raptor MAF, but now it's no big deal if the same features of the ME are now available on the Extender........ funny how things change!

Does the Mustang crowd bicker like this? There are so many parts available their cars. I wonder if one man came up with all of them? Stop the bitching and let technolgy progress. You could argue for years over who came up with what. It has to start somewhere.

bob bailey just worked on burning a 72 lb chip for me. I am going to try out the 3.5 MAF (stock) with a race jace plate, and the 72s in lieu of the MSD 50s.

here is my combo

GN1 heads (stock)
weber 206 billet roller
scorpion roller rockers
studs, steel mains
stock rods, crank
72s/3.5 maf/trans +
race jace plate
TE45 PTE Turbo (.83 housing)
stock manifolds
forged trw (8-1)
ported intake & stock doghous
62MM throttle body
Reds XP dbl pump
AC 9" NL 3200 conv
Art Carr trans
TH downpipe
dual wastegates on X over
ATR SS exh
Eastern FM intercooler

hoping to finally crack some 10s with good traction. I never really cranked up the boost on the TE45 because I was worried I might lean out at really high boost with the MSD 50s. hoping the 72s will be PLENTY and still be streetable.

I need someone in the VA area to help out with tuning and getting Direct scan going and reading the results. I only have a scan master right now. I want to capture some data and get it to bob to refine the tune.

the car has been together for a while and well broken in (enough to leak oil out the rear main again!!!)

any really solid buick mechanics in VA???? I used to do all my own work but buz and family committments (and just plain LAZEE) I like to farm out jobs that need a lift.

I have worked with Ron in NJ, but that's a bit of a hike for simple stuff.

I have a laptop so I guess an EGT and Direct scan are my next steps.

I also want to put FG hood, trunk lid, and "poke holes" in the door beams to lighten up the car. still thinking of getting rid of the AC too as it is becoming more of a race car and I pop the t tops alot. I bought this car new and have renewed interest in it.

anyone in VA or near that can do a good custom roll bar??1

sorry for all the ???s

I gotta tell ya, bob is super nice to deal with and so is steve. debating the approach is fine, but keep it cool. both the ME and the Extender setups work very well, and are excellent tech.

pay your money and take your chances. keep the shiney side up.

tia for any thoughts.:D

I had a Principle back in the day also. He busted my a$$ with a paddle, this was before dention.:D

Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Its not a matter of who did what. The fact that we have so many ingenious people that can mess with the electronics on these cars is a true blessing. Both the ME and Extender are truly great designs. Each has some features the others have.
Mike, I just ordered an Extender for my 55's earlier this week. Will it have these updated features you spoke of?

To answer Clayton's question and not go into anything else.....

The programmable open loop idle, lean cruz mode, spool fuel mode plus several other modes were a part of, and still apart of the production MaxE in 1996. The shift light was programmable as well. I was not aware of it but I have heard that Red used the engine light for that purpose, at the time.

Let me make something clear here. I NEVER said Red stole anything. I just was a little tired of read about this great new idea and breakthrough that had already been done years ago. If I came across any other way I am sorry.

We drove to Bowling Green around 91 or 92 with a "lean cruise chip" but frankly never sold them, at that time no one really cared and most guys did not even know what a scan tool was. A low 12 car was like a high 10 car today. Even I would look at Bob when he started telling me about this new thing he came up with and say "people don't care about that, they just want to go fast" At the same time frame Bob was flashing the SES light for all kinds of things and transmitting different tings to scan tools that Buick. (ever see the prom ID change constantly on out Street Chip) He did share that info with a few guys at that time but once again we never sold much of it until much later. As far as my memory goes I believe that Red was the first guy to "sell" a chip with a shift light. Lean cruise we added quite a while back but not to the level of today. Thngs like MAF lock were also being sold many years ago by us but we never really made a big deal about it and many of the other things that Bob made very early on until some others did in their chips and got credit for them. I was sitting in my office thinking "hey we been selling that for years". That in retrospect was a mistake. I will only make one more comment. I have known Bob since around 1988 I know of no one (and I know most of the folks who make chips) who has done more with Buick chips than he. Ask Joe Lubrant, Jay Carter, and even Steve Y if you don't believe me. I don't think they will dispute it either.

One post, then I'm done.

Open loop idle is part of the GM code. I didn't like the STOCK implementation of it
so I changed it. Thrasher had their version too. Case closed.

Lean cruise mode is part of the stock GM code. Some of the software is missing so I
had to write some of my own stuff to enable it. Thrasher supposedly had a
version but I have no data on that.

Spool fuel in the Rev E extender is only active during the brake torque. I wrote
this specifically to help in instances where the BLM's have settled too low which makes
the brake-torque fueling too rich. Most guys will wind up leaving this alone.

Shift light has been in the Extender for a couple years, now it's adjustable.

The adjustment method in the Extender is my own stuff. It adjusts differently.
The stock hardware has very few inputs for the driver to control. If there were others
that I could use, I would.

The 512 gram range is not enough for guys with 72's and larger if they need to run
100% dutycycle on the injectors. Thus the "Extreme" version.

The Max E is a good product, I never said otherwise. I consider Steve my friend as
well as a friendly competitor.

<snip>

The Max E and Max E R is not just a "race car" product. I have always had excellent driveability, and fuel mileage from my Max E 16. The Max E R "mafless" version that I am running now drives smoother and better than any fixed chip I have ever ran, and I am gettin 20+ MPG with 55# injectors. Being as it uses no maf, you can run a 5" air tract to the turbo if you chose to, there is no limiting factor there. Improved Throttle response, spool up, lean cruise, and the ability to make many changes without sending a chip back has always been a major plus to the Max E system.

Without a doubt the new version of the Trans + and extender chip is an excellent product as well. Though I've never used a Trans or trans+, going by the positive post from so many folks it evidently does what it was designed to do very well.

I'm sure that when Red A. does release his new Maf that it will work great too. I consider myself luck that guys like Steve Yaklin, Bob Bailey, Red and others continue to develop products for cars that are bordering the "antique" status.

Thanks to all the innovators, they are what makes our cars so great.

Dwight,
Glad to hear you are having good luck with the MAF less deal. I think it is the logical next step and I applaud Steve for making work. A speed density system (completely programmable) was floating around about 7 or 8 years ago. It was supposed to be sold by one of the big vendors at that time (not me) I did get to play with it and work on it a bit. We drove it from MI to the nats that year too. Spool was lighting fast but it never went anywhere.
Mike

Can we get our current Extender chips upgraded to the latest version and if so, how much? Thanks.

I personally think Bob Bailey is a genius and where would the Buick community be without him? He has a great product, and so does Steve Y. Let the trials begin on who invented what. If you've been around long enough, you will know the answer to that.

The other thing is, don't forget that with the new ME-R mafless version, Bob was the one who does the ecm mods for Steve. Nobody seemed to make a big deal over that one. In the end, the end users such as us are the ones to benefit.

I think it was made quite clear and Bob was given kudos for it, remember about 3 weeks ago when everyone was gonna throw there MAF away and get an ME-R. I think the first thing that Steve Y said was that he "wasn't going to let Bob go out of business". Now it seems the shoe is on the other foot.

I do find the timeframe of this new invention somewhat ironic though.

Not so ironic really, that is when you stop and think about how long they spend in development and testing.

I think you are missing my point. When projects are completed and when they are released are not always one in the same. But I will speculate no further as to how a businessman earns his keep.

These threads crack me up sometimes. I can't believe people complain about such matters.

It is amazing to me that with cars built over 15 years ago we still have vendors that continue to make (and improve/update) products for our cars. We should be thankful that Steve Y. and Bob Bailey still are developing new things to make our cars run better.

Be Happy,
John
