I thought Orlando's was rebuilt with all stock parts, actually USED stock parts. He probably ran it stock for several seasons and then stuck used slugs back in it. Steve (brick) probably knows better than me though. This was also back in the day of 7th and 8th injectors and red's chips and stock mafs. He was definately pushing the envelope of progress.
You might be correct Brad, it's been quite a while. I seem to remember him running the unrebuilt shortblock for a few seasons and then I think he purchased another motor that he rebuilt with the used stock parts and used for a while. Either way it was stock stuff, stock main caps, rods, rod bolts, etc.

Don't want to say the builders name, but I remember a story of him sticking some stock used slugs back in the car, new bearings, and orlando taking strait to the track. The car was smoking like a freight train cuz the rings hadn't sealed, and on the 2nd pass after he let off, the rings sealed, and he proceeded to run some killer times. Something like several back to back 10.04s. You can't deny what Orlando was able to do with low tech electronics and some serious guru know how. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember laz being the "guru" that did the tuning.
I'm sure Orlando ran it for a long time before he had to "freshen" it up with USED parts. Orlando was known for running the stock block at 30+ psi and keeping it fat so it wouldn't blow.

I remember Orlando tuning the car starting pig rich and leaning it out by turning on the dial.:biggrin: It really was impressive how fast he was able to run with the stock stuff back then as well as how long it lasted for him at that level and with a pretty simple combo that consisted of ported iron heads, a 66mm Qtrim turbo, stock MAF, Red's chips, and he used a few different cams but I remember one of them being an old Lunati grind that was a 205/205 flat tappet that one of his buddies threw in the trash can.
At the time he was also using a cold-boxed stock IC which was essentially a poor mans Liquid cooler.

Don't forget the string tied to the emergency brake for a low-tech trans brake. I was up at moroso with "big brad" and orlando one day. Hearing orlando tell stories about yanking the string and then going strait to the shifter to hit 2nd was good comedy. Later that day (95*+ heat), brad and orlando were drag racing the AC systems in their tow vehicles to see which one put out the coldest temps through the vents in the dash via a meat thermometer. Anybody know what "Big Brad" is doing these days? I ran into (crap, can't remember his name) that bought brads car and also had the purple T that was stolen, at a tradeshow the other day.

sorry to muck up a thread, but this brings back old memories. It was Kyle that bought brad's car.

Last I heard "Big Brad" bought a new ZO6 Vette, but haven't seen him out at the car shows or the track in years. Kyle did indeed purchase his old GN and then he sold it to our buddy Matt "TransAm WS6 420" on here. Definitely some good ol' memories!

I don't know who the fastest would be, but I do know we built a customers car this past summer from a stock Ttype and finished the season up running 10.0's at 135plus....on drag radials. Original motor with all bolts ons. We only went out like 3-4 times with the car makin a couple passes each time while we sorted out a few bugs. When we went to Cecil, the car was ready to rock. We bracket raced on Saturday so left the tune alone, otherwise we would have worked it to make the 9 second pass. Looks like it will have to wait till next spring, unless we get a chance to go out before the 1st of the year. As for the difficulty of building a stock block monster, the most important aspect is starting with a solid performing engine, good oil pressure, after that tuning without leaning or detonating. Choosing the right parts capable of flowing the air is what it's all about...... Tuning takes time, but it's no mystery or secret, taking your time to get there is more important for longevity of your engine. Lots of stronger parts, trans, driveline, suspension are also needed. A good 60ft also is required. The technology today we have available makes it all pretty easy, the torque convertors play the biggest part, there are at least 3 or 4 manufacturers out there with converters that will get the job done. Turbo Tweak chips make it easier for the do it yourselfer budget minded guy, or FAST XFI if one can afford it. It's not rocket science...... even though some would lead you to believe that. Just a well thought out combo with the right parts, time and of course a few bucks will get you there....

Yes, i was running consistantly in the 133-134 range and got greedy and turned the boost up too 33psi and the main saddle in the block cracked at number 3.
I should have left well enough alone and worked on my 60 foot more at the time.
Tuning is a MAJOR factor, at the time i was using a gen 6 dfi with bone stock headers and an old Duttweiler front mount.... all internals were factory original never apart including bearings/rings/bolts except for cam.
Also had 72lb inj's, none lock up converter (ATI) and 3.70 gears.
Just remember air and fuel make power(but keep it balanced properly) good luck and hope you get there!

Still catching up from the Honeymoon here..... Turbonetics 70-Ptrim ball bearing turbo, CC212 roller, ported Champion aluminum heads with 1.55 roller rockers.... and there is definitely more in her. We weren't 60fting very good that day, still had a few more lbs of boost to run and a few degrees of timing to play with... 135mph, could hit 137 or so... when we're done. It wouldn't be the first time for that turbo running that fast, Gene fleury ran those kind of numbers about 6-7 years ago...
