Filter change question

On a 200, is the metal clip on the bottom of the VB used to hold the filter off of the bottom of the VB or is it to hold the filter up?

I stole this pic to use as a visual aid lol. Is this installed correctly or should the filter be under the clip.

it holds the filter off the pan up to the vb.so the filter isnt hanging down.

I think it holds the filter down,that is a Russ Merrit pic and I don't think he did it wrong:wink:

Now that I look at the pic, it's not even a 200 filter.

That is a 7004r filter and is a bottom feed vs stock top feed.I just installed mine yesterday.I think it is a good idea:biggrin:

It pushes the filter down into the oil (top and bottom feed) and there is a relief in the plastic that it corresponds to. Look at a 700 filter in a 700 and the metal tab lines up with it. The 2004R filter has the same relief in the plastic to keep it "loaded" downward. If you take away the tab, sometimes the filter can "fall out" and rest on the bottom of the pan. I have seen way too many to remember counting that the filter is sitting in the bottom of the pan and either someone just built it recently or had a service and someone removed the tab.

OK, I have read this thread and last month threads of having the tranny filter clip on top of filter to prevent from grounding the electrical terminal and others claiming to place the clip on bottom of tranny filter to prevent to filter from falling out of TB.
Can someone please set the story straight on which is the correct way to set this clip position? Thanks

Very simple,look at the picture and do it exactly like that.This was a pic from Russ Merrit he has forgoten more than some on here will ever know

According to GNeric, he wrote on #6 thread, if you remove the clip the filter might fall out and lay on the bottom of the pan. You are telling me to do the same as the photo showing that the filter clip is place on top of the filter. And if so, is it possible the filter might fall out?

It's pretty clear after reading this:

I went and looked at a filter kit I have kicking around. The top of the filter, if you were to look at it as it would be when installed, does have a relief cast in to it for the tab. The tab on the valve body is used as a "standoff" rather than a retainer. It exerts a backwards pressure on the filter/o-ring in the tube which must lock it in to place. Here's a pic:

Having said that, I bet a lot of newbs and idiots like myself have these installed with the tab holding the filter up against the VB. I know mine's like that right now. I wonder if it ever grounds any of the electronics in the VB on the filter. That probably wouldn't be good for business.

I haven't done the 700 filter in the 200, but in a 700, if the tang is left out, the filter can "fall out of the pump" enough that it will suck air. Fluid will drop into the pan and the trans will work again until fluid is sucked up into the trans again and then another neutral situation. The tang is important. GM wouldn't have put it there if there was not a reason.
