It's not that age that makes the newbies bail. It's getting a car then blowing it to bits while they're out of money that makes them bail.

There's also a small percentage that gets a car, make a huge parts order, loses 100hp doing it then decides these cars of POSs.

Very true haha, but you experienced guys all started as newbies sometime. I'm just getting started ;)

True. But this experienced guy didn't spend my last dime getting the car then spend a bunch of money of 'performance' parts instead of preventative maintenance items.

Are you set on a GN?? Any thoughts about a Turbo Regal instead...might be a bit less money for same performance.

Yes I am. I understand the appeal and the fact that it's the best bang for the buck but I want a GN.

And by the way this isn't no young guy failing and bailing crap. I've been saving up and doing research for a long time and I'm in it to win it haha. And this is where I'm sure I'm gonna get a lot of criticism... but I'm 19  and I'm sure I'm gonna get nothing but "oh this kid thinks it's gonna be some easy dream car" but I've heard it all before. Like I said, I ain't stoopid :D . Why do you think I'm into Turbo Buicks and not ricers?

OK
Good luck

You have a daughter? :D

I paid $5500 for my GN from a friend 6 months after he paid $7000 + $1500 on PM and upgrades.....

oh yeah.... that was 15 years ago. :D

Oh no you don't!
:D

And don't ya love paying dimes on the dollar for someone else's work?
Some of the best deals are divorce cars.
Those decisions are always made in haste.
Ask me how I know...

By the way I just wanted to thank everyone on this forum for all the advice and answering my questions and whatnot. This is such a super helpful group of guys and I'm glad to be here

Alright - but before I perma bail on this thread - can you at least allow me a parting snicker at the "but I'm 19" part?
:wideyed:
I have car parts older than you.
And cars.
Yes - and socks. :D

Rock on kid.
Welcome to the club.

LOL - these cars are POS.
But my kinda POS.

The answer is yes to every one of those questions. I've had the privilege of learning from the mistakes of others. my friend bought a 1994 Buick Roadmaster sedan for $1000, (you know the ones with the LT1 engine, and that are pretty much just an Impala SS with cushy suspension, rear drums, and an old man face :) ) and he claimed that he was gonna make it a "nice sleeper" 2 years and about 10k later it's still a rusty pile. A really FUN rusty pile, but a rusty pile none the less :D .
He wants to get rid of it and sell it, but since it looks like crap and it's a car nobody wants he won't get a dime for it no matter what. So that taught me not to waste my money on worthless cars. My brother thought he could restore a 1971 Chevelle SS but he got only as far as tearing the front off and pulling the drive train out, and now it's been sitting for the past 10 years, taking up 1 bay of our garage. So that's taught me that if I want a nice car, buy a nice one in the first place because restoration projects never work out if you're the average person who has a job and other things to do. And my dad has a 1995 Mustang GT convertable that he bought as his Mid-life crisis car haha. And it was really slick and clean when he bought it. But since our garage was taken up by garbage and clutter and unmovable cars, (that didn't get cleaned out until I was 18 and I cleaned it myself) he didn't bother garage keeping it. Now the paint peels and the top is ruined.... plus our cats climb all over the cars and I HATE it  . So that taught me that if I have a nice car, you should have a place to put it.

My takeaway from that very very sad tale of woe is:
You can chose your friends - but you can't chose family - sadly.
And don't have cats :D

Mine was a "I want to quit the police force and build houses and I need a truck TOMORROW" deal.

Oh - you're still dreaming of your almost adopted son - DannyJov....let him go...he is banished to the netherworld...:D

Yeah, I knew his shit was going to be totaled. That's why I didn't want to waste one of my NOS castings on his engines. He had too much drive and not enough "hold back and don't blow my shit up".

Ok, having gone down this road fairly recently--my sage advice is that 10 g's probably will not buy you what you are looking for. You may be lucky and find an owner that is either in mortgage foreclosure, lost their job, getting a divorce, daughter is getting married in Italy ( this one applied to my situation getting my GN) or you just stumbled upon a total basket case. I live north of allentown and Dennis kirban is a great resource in our area. I stole my car for 15k but it is not perfect and still needs stuff. I can help if needed, oh by the way I do know aliitle about gm too. See my profile. Best of luck. Dp

Don't worry about the being young part. The old timers here just automatically believe if you are young, you MUST also be dumb. Being smart is all it takes to have a properly running TR/GN. I've seen plenty of "experienced" car guys get their azz handed to them by owning a GN too. That's what makes these cars fun! When you have a good running one, it'll impress yourself, you'll have a sense of accomplishment, and it'll impress anyone who's never had a ride in one before. Keep doing what you're doing. Make us young guys look good. Although I'm getting to be an old guy too, so I'm sure I'll get cynical here soon. :)

That budget most likely won't allow you to buy what you want to buy.

Even with the economy the way it is, rust free GNs that far north that don't need money don't really exist at $10K.

Unless you settle for a hotair, you might stand a chance.

Well it finally happened! 4 days ago I got a rust free 51k original miles 1986 GN! It's not without its problems of course but it's rust free and that's all that matters to me.

OK hi I just signed up to this forum because I'm saving up to buy a GN, and I wanna know the stuff to look out for. Especially pertaining to rust. Can you guys help me out? I know that these are 20+ year old cars and that they can rust anywhere. But I wanna know the specifics. I really appreciate any help you guys can give a forum newbie here. And I'm not really familiar with this forum or any forum because this is the first one I've ever signed up to so any advice would be great

Here's a few pictures of my frame. Took the body off two weeks ago and as you can see there's a few places that need to be repaired. I live in Philadelphia which probably isn't one of the better states to purchase a car from. Best places is southwestern portion of the US. I replaced the the door skins and a small part of the quarter on each side. Fenders and rockers were good. Also, there's a picture of my deck lid. There's a lot of hours in that deck lid! G-body sent me one that they said was "good," just some "mild surface rust." It was so bad that when I called and complained they said, send some pictures, so I did, well needless to say it was so bad they took it off the bill and told me they didn't want it back. Still at the shop if anyone wants it. Just pay the shipping. I'm the second owner of my car and it's been garaged the entire time I've owned it and pretty much the same when my friend owned it.
