Forward clutch plate

Anyone seen a cracked forward clutch backing plate before and what would that cause? That's the thick plate right before the lock ring. I looked up the GM part number 8268808 per article on gntype org and there are two plates per package. I only see one backing plate though. Thanks, Paul
