I have the engine out of the car to install heads, timing chain, and weld headers. I have already installed the heads and intake while waiting on the new timing chain and rear seal from Jack
Cotton. I dropped the pan and found timing gear teeth and non-magnetic metal. I pulled the # 2 main cap and looked at the thrust bearing and found the sides of the bearing scarred and worn. I am now thinking of replacing rod and main bearings from the bottom end without pulling the heads and intake back off and wasting the gaskets. Any suggestions on this method would be very helpful. Which manufacturers bearings and do they need to be specific for VIN 7 eng.? Things were going great until this happened. Anyone know what caused this problem? The crank has over .030" end play also. Engine has 60,000 miles on it.

Thanks
Tim

I believe factory tolerances for thrust are .003-.009.

Sounds like you need another crankshaft to me. Otherwise you are asking for more problems.

Your right Steve the crank is scrap. I took it to the machine shop and they said no repair for it. I have found another crank that has to be taken out of an engine. I will take it for a mag. test and checkout at the mach. shop. I am also taking the converter to the tranny shop to have it checked for ballooning. Now I am into a complete rebuild. I will also be taking the short block to the machine shop. Anybody got any suggestions on which rings, bearings or other parts to use. This is not a race car but I do drive it hard when I am crusin. Not a daily driver either.
Thanks

Tim, If at all possible have K&P do the machine work on your engine here in Augusta. Billy handles quite a few of the v6 turbo engines and he can point you in the right direction as far as parts are concerned.

Billy at K+P is the one I have been talking to. I had a set of heads reworked last year by K+P. They are Top Shelf people. They seem to be real familiar with these turbo engines. A lot of Buick turbo stuff in there shop.
Thanks
Tim
