OK, I shortened the story for the sake of ease, but here is the long story.
I totaled my Harley, the insurance said it was worth $x thousand; my friend coincidentally had a Harley of the same model that wasn’t running. So he asked me to buy the wreck back from insurance and he would pay me for it.
I said OK, the insurance said it would be three thousand dollars, so they gave me a check for $x minus three thousand and the bike. I turned the wrecked bike over to my friend and at that time he said he would mail me a check within the week.
He lives a few hours away; several e-mails of “I will be sending it to you this week” and nothing appears.
We have several mutual friends, some of which know about the transaction first hand, and all of them are like leave it alone and if he pays you, then he pays, otherwise forget it.
So, I appear to be set up as the bad guy among our friends if I press for my money.
By virtue of this board we all have expensive toys, but I doubt any of us are rich enough to just blow off three thousand – I know I’m not that rich.
Thus, I think I have to forget it, lesson learned, and tough noogies.
But, if I have a chance to a favor for a friend again, will I do it? If not, what kind of friend am I, what kind of friendship do I have?
Oh well, chin up, have a good attitude about it, nothing I can really do without screwing myself.
