Gas prices and driving the Buick dilema...

As we all know gas prices are just plain ridiculous and we have to find creative ways to save money in other places in order to buy gas for our vehicles. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has gone below 93 octane in order to save money and what did they do to make sure that their TR is running fine? I decided to leave my TR alone for awhile :frown: and hopefully catch a break in between to fill up my tank. I afraid if I downgrade the octane the car will run funny... Just food for thought... Thanks.

Will run the same as long as you stay out of boost in my experience.

If you keep your foot out of it or turn the boost down, no problems. I wasn't thinking one day and had mine filled with 87 before I realized it. Drove it easy and it ran fine.

So I guess that means I can't play with it in moments when the usual suspects (Mustangs) are around...

I havent changed anything. Just pay more to keep playing. Oddly it gets the best gas mileage of my 3 cars. 06 TrailBlazer SS(which needs premium), and the 89 Chevy K5 Blazer (uses 87) love the gas too.

If you refill the 17 ish gallons the GN takes, 93 octane will only cost you $5 per tank more - not huge $$$.

To run 87, I would take the wastgate actuator off the turbo or at least crank the boost WAY down to under 7 pounds or so. Doing this will make your car incredibly slow and no fun to drive...

Headgaskets and bearings are expensive too

I was thinking of cutting out food...errr wait strike that, um Ramen noodles 10 for a nickle on sale now!

Really German I dont know what im gonna do or how IM gonna do it, its at 3.50 for el cheapo right now, I could prolly get with my neighbor and bury a coaxle line and we split the cable bill...lol

Well, after reading different opinions, I decided to leave it alone and just continue to fill it with 93... I only do it once a week or every 160 miles (gauge not accurate) whatever comes first.

Therefore I will continue play just like I did a few minutes ago when I found out that there is a gas station near by that was selling 93 for $3.07 (only today). Hopefully the gas won't too high this summer...:smile:

I know one thing the further north you go the higher the price! Anyhow we have plans to go to NY this summer and it looks very tough... I guess I better start buying the Ramen noodles soon...

yeh tell me about it...when im out in the field, i put on ave 600 miles a week which isnt much compared to what some might put but its still a hundee in gas if i make 25 mpg which i do

I have slowed down on the freeway though......
Although I don't remember the exact formula, wind resistance isn't linear as you increase speed, it is exponential
I believe it is:
D=C*A*(V^2)/Cp

D= Drag
C= Shape coefficient.
A= Cross sectional area.
V= Velocity
Cp=Coefficient of pressure (constant for below Mach .7

Non the less i have my cruise set at 62.5 so im at least making a mile a min

Run it as low as you can to get as much of the 87 out as possible. And expect gas to be over $4 a gallon come summertime.

It costs money to play, don't drive a performance car if you can't deal with the gas prices.

I'm the only person I know not going nuts over gas prices. Either stop driving or deal with it, there's really no other option.

Saving ten cents a gal isn't worth dumping the lower octane into the Buick.

i would'nt even take the chance, i just paid $57 bucks for a 5 gallons of 110 at my local vp, that of course is aside from the $37 bucks for 5 gal of alky, $94 bucks for 10 gallons of gas .. but she runs sooo sweeeet with the good stuff :smile: i think it's woth it . I know we have to much money in our cars to put something in the gas tank that might cause some damage when we step on it. just my 2 cents.

93 here is at $3.51 thats where i pump my gas but at other stations here homestead -racetrack it's $3.89 and on sample it's $3.99

I drive our GN to save gas.
Try daily driving a carb'd Jeep that averages 12-13 mpg and doens't like to run on anything but premium!

Gas already is over $4 a gallon. In Danville Indiana. It was on the news last night. It has to be a price gouging thing.

Ditto. I had the same thought of running only 87 in the Buick, but then again I don't drive it enough to justify it. Plus as mentioned you have to pay to play. That's one of the reasons I sold my Chevelle. It was a thirsty big block, wished I still had it despite high prices.
