While checking for vacuum leaks the car suddenly died. Wasn't spraying anything at the time. When I tried to restart it smoke boils out of the K&N filter! What the hell is that? Thanks, R.B.

What would cause smoke to boil out of the K&N filter while you are trying to start it?

Thanks Steve. I tried to start it again a while ago and smoke steadly boils out the K&N filter. Can't hear it backfiring it just boils smoke. Anyway, I noticed smoke also coming from a spot about halfway down in my maf chrome pipe. Couldn't see where so I took it off and lo and behold a giant hole or more like a gash in the pipe itself!! It was up against the bolt on the left front of the alternator. I'm sure this hole has been causing a myriad of problems. This hole almost looks lke it was melted in there. Is there anyway it would have shorted out up against this bolt? I taped up the hole with duct tape but it still won't start and still boils smoke out the filter. What do you think? Thanks, R.B.

Did you try turning on the ignition with filter off to see where the smoke is coming from? The pipe shouldn't have shorted.

Well, that could certainly screw up the air calibration and cause your detonation problems....doubt that it had anything to do with the refusal to start, tho.

Does it sound like it is trying to crank properly? (wondering about timing chain)

Sounds like it may have spark.....try spraying some wd-40 in the tb and see if it tries to run? Got fuel pressure?

I just go down the list, spark, fuel, etc as Jim listed.

Hey guys, give me your best guess on why this smoke is bellowing out the K&N filter when I try and start it. If the maf suddenly went out would ths cause it? It's snowing outside so I can't really do much right now. Thanks, R.B.

Well what is there? Sounds turbo related. I agree with the others, time to pull the MAF pipe. Takes about 1 minute with a flashlight!! I have seen a melted ring/piston do this and also bad turbo seals but hard to tell.

John, It turns pretty easy, but this is the first time I've ever turned one so I don't really know how easy easy is, if you know what I mean. Now what????

Confused about the smoke blowing out of the K&N. Shouldn't it me sucking air?

To reset the ECM, just unplug the orange wire behind the battery. Let it sit for a few seconds, plug it back together, then start the car.

-Banning.

Unplugged the orange wire and plugged it back and also did the maf to no avail. Would you please explain the smoke problem?

Are you getting any codes? Any water/coolant in the oil? What did a compression test show? Anything out the exhaust....smell color? Hard to tell of the info given.

Does the smoke come out with the key on or do you have to try and start it to get the smoke? Let us know. If you are getting smoke, take off the MAF pipe, is it coming out of the turbo? If so remove the up pipe and see if its coming out of the throttle body. If its in the engine then I am guessing you had to crank it to get the smoke. What colour and smell is the smoke? If the timing chain is off a few cogs that could happen but I would suspect you would have some backfires to go along with it. Keep describing your symptoms to us.

With key on, check all the Scanmaster values, tell us what they are.

Disconnect the MAF tube from the inlet bell of the turbo (like you already did to check the play of the wheel). Leave the MAT and MAF sensors connected. Make sure nothing is gonna get into the turbo (shop towels, tools, whatever) thru the now open inlet bell and try to start the car. Is smoke still "boiling" out the K&N filter? If not is it "boiling" out of the turbo inlet bell? If "boiling" from the filter still, I'd first suspect some kinda of electrical SNAFU from the MAT or MAF sensor. I assume you checked for some hidden whammy in the filter and MAF tube (can't imagine what would be in there that would be burning). Disconnect the MAT sensor and try to start again. Did the smoke go away? Was the smoke coming from the turbo inlet bell before (see above)? If so, report back.

What does the smoke smell like? Does it smell like exhaust? Does it smell like something electrical burning?

When you were spraying for vacuum leaks before, where were you spraying exactly?

I was spraying B-12 on vacuum lines and the bottom of the injectors. Not near sensors or coil pack. It was about 2 minutes later when it died. It doesn't smoke with just the key on, only when I try and crank it. Took the maf pipe off and the smoke is coming out of inlet bell. Maybe smells like exhaust, kinda sweet smell. The smoke doesn't come out the first 10 seconds of cranking, only a few seconds later. It comes out in puffs and looks kinda white. Don't know where mat sensor is located.
