Good Deal or Not?

A good friend of mine inherited a 1987 Grand National after his father passed away several years ago before he was old enough to drive and it hasn't been on the road at least that long. His mom never would let him drive it (instead he bought a v6 mustang =/) anyway he is thinking about selling it to someone he knows. He was thinking about $15,000 but another friend of mine said the market is a little down right now and that is to expensive. Here is the info I have about the car.

A/C is getting fixed this week
supposedly 26psi boost
torn drivers seat
body looks to be in good shape

Yeah thats what I am thinking. I mean he said his dad put work into the car but back then he was younger and didn't really pay attention so I'll have to try to find out about the trans and motor. 26psi is nice but not worth blowing up a classic

I think I would have a 2nd opinion on the car from a Professional 3rd party, like an appraisal. The market is down.... Yes and No. I still see people spending money and buying cars. One thing you have to keep in mind is that no matter what you pay for it, you'll have to stick some money in it somewhere, especially if its been sitting for awhile. Then you'll find little things you don't like that you'll want to fix too i.e. interior trim, mods, etc.

If the body and paint is in good shape, and it runs good, $15k is IMO a decent price, even if there is a tear in the seat cover (YearOne sells replacements). Other things to look at are the t-top seals if equipped, the rear main seals seem to be a common leak, make sure the car has been stored properly and there is no serious rust issues, and definately find out all the mods that have been done to the car!

My best friend sold his GN last fall for $17k, he had an '86 w/62k on it, astroroof, GNX wheels, and a few minor mods.

You might want to re read the OP's orignal post about what the seller said.
Here's the exact words, "he is thinking about selling it to someone he knows", The OP is not thinking of buying, just gathering info for a friend.

Well I actually am thinking about buying it since he wants to try to sell it to someone he knows, I'd rather at least try to get it then have him sell it to someone else who would disappear with the car. And the only way I could get it would be if I can convince my dad to chip in as an early college graduation present. So far out of the cars I've looked at it is the most expensive (also looked at a '92 Mustang GT 5.0 for $5,000 and a '99 Camaro Z28 for $9,000).

The A/C on his car is getting fixed locally and is sitting in the parking lot so I stopped and looked at it today close up. Mileage is actually under 62k, front bumper is a little faded on the right side and has splintered cracks on the left side, both under the lights, driver seat is torn vertically kinda like paper going through a shredder down the middle (not as bad in real life as that sounded), and the only other thing I noticed is that the weatherstripping is cracked and probably brittle but after 23 years thats expected.

Crispy Chicken - I would love to take you up on that offer but I really don't think it is going to happen.

its all good, just thowing it out there not even really trying to sell it.. good luck with your car shopping... if you end up paying for you own gas and just need something to drive around.. those jetta diesel cars are pretty cool.. people clame to get around 45mpg.. i've been looking at them my self. 90 threw 2006 can range from 2,000- 15,000 dollars.. my gmc sirra 1500 get around 16-17mpg.. as much as I drive I would save 8,000 a year in fuel.. The savings alone would help me fund my race car crap over a little time... good luck!

Well I used to have a 2004 Dodge Neon SXT then I got my dad's 2002 Ford Taurus SES when he got a new Fusion SEL so logically my next car should be GM lol. The family said they'll chip in for a new car when I graduate college in a year and a half but like I said if I can find a nice deal that might come sooner.

I'd like to get a V8 but a F/I I4 or V6 would be ok too. I honestly really like the Turbo Cobalt SS but I'm not sure if I'd like to own one. plus we don't have any manual trans cars and the only one I've ever tried to drive was a 1993 (pre-GM) Saab and that didn't go well so transmission could be an issue
