They don't use much. I'd say it's about the same price as charcoal per use. Even smoking tenderloin for 3hrs, it doesn't use more than a few pounds.

When we cook steaks, it probably uses more because you want to cook them around 400 degrees so it's running on high speed.

When we cooked all those steaks in BG it may have used 5lbs.

And buddy we cooked a bunch of them!! :D

Seriously, there is no other choice if you can spring for it. I know for a fact we cooked over 80lb of steaks that evening and never had to do more than turn once and take off, not one flame up, and every steak cooked evenly!!!

Hey Shane, Charbroil makes one called the RED it is in 2 different sizes 3 burner and 4 burner also with a burner off to the side, but the thing about it is that it is infered meaning that there is no flame around the cooked food there is a big U shaped pan and the fire is behind that, also you can add wood chips for smoking and cleanup is easy just put it on clean and the grill heats up to approx 800 deg for clean up. HTH Jr.

How long

How long does it take to heat up to 400, and cook about 5 steaks.

I got news for ya - 400* is NOT good enough to cook a steak - sounds like a fine grill for smoking or grilling chicken, but NO WAY would I let a steak get near it - but then I am a steak snob extreme.

Steak needs way more heat to be right - but if ya like Outback or Lone Star or such, then ya might not notice the difference.

There ya have it, etch it in stone:eek:

it must be oxygen & acetylene for you then.

Just checked out the video - that grill does look like a very cool grill (bit of a pun there).

If doing large amounts of slow grilling like ribs or smoking fish, chicken, Boston Butt, brisket...it seems extremely controllable.

how is the Traeger Grill for grilling burgers, brats, and hot dogs. Sounds like a nice grill for smoking.

It's perfect for burgers, hot dogs and any kind of pork like ribs and tenderloin as it is very controllable.

I've eaten those steaks that are supposed to be the best in the world. Cooked at 1000 degrees or whatever. Never cared for them and end up cutting off the outside. It does lock a lot of the flavor in but these at 400 taste just fine to me. The grill at 400 will not dry them out and the flavor stays in the meat. I do have a small one that will get to 550 that will get more of that seared outside that some people prefer.

The grill in the video takes about 15 minutes to reach 400 degrees from a cold start and will cook 5 steaks in 30 min or so.

There are other sizes. The smaller grills will reach temp sooner and recover quicker. The larger ones are the opposite. The next size up from what you see in the video can be bought with 2 burners rather than one. It will get hotter and recover quicker.

2 best steaks I have ever eaten were;

1. Thads Steaks in NYC! If anyone knows this place it is right at time square. Kinda like a cafeteria line but the food is EXCELLENT. Fresh stuff I have ever had from a restaurant...

2. A friend of mine, great cook, cooked him and I a steak a on plain on weber charcoal grill. He seared it with the flames and then let it cook. I have had $150 meals that weren't as good.... I think it is all in the cook!

Shane,

Buy the Traeger, If you do not like it I will buy it from you.

Trust me my fellow Big Eater, they are the BOMB!

My parents have a traeger and it is a very neat grill. Burgers, brats, roast, shrimp, whatever tastes awesome. Hell we've cooked frozen pizzas on it before . BUT I must confess that i'd rather do my own steaks on the cheap gas grill they gave me when they bought their traeger. For an all around grill that you will find yourself using all the time, it's hard to beat a traeger.

A local guy made a big smoker using the guts out of 4 high end traeger grills. That guy wins pretty much every contest he enters.

I think I may go look at them this weekend guys. A little town about 30mins away has them according to thier website. I will let you know:biggrin:

Chargriller makes a grill called the Duo. One side is gas, the other charcoal, and it has a burner on the side and optional fire box for smoking. Best of both worlds for about $250. I love mine and it really doesn't take up too much space on the patio.

Yeah, but can you make salsa on it ;)

Sure can...I can set the blender right on top of the attached burner...and voila! I'm making salsa here soon if you would like me to package and ship it to you. I'm thinking maybe if I freeze it and ship it UPS overnight it would be OK.

Yep, we do the pizzas too. A little store sells them already made up, all we do is throw them on the grill.

It is cool enough in most of the US - vacuum pack it and do not freeze - or better yet, it is too easy to just make it yourself so send the recipe.

But be warned - once you start enjoying fresh salsa, it will be hard to enjoy the stuff in a jar
