HI Guys

I am About to put my motor together. I was woundering if I should use Head bolt or Head studs? Is one better than the other? Anybody with any input thanks in advance.

Thanks Dan

I Dan

stud will give you more clamping than bolt
but the head will be very very hard to lift
if you toast a head gasket with stud.
I have a head gasket toast and I will
go with arp bolt I think bolt are ok
for a street and strip car

IMO

Claude

please excuse
my english

Hey Buickfreak & Sweetv6,
Thanks for the reply. I read some info on ARP website which seemed to make sense. Like the head gasket lining up better and a few other things. I just thought somebody may have tried both of them , and which worked better. Thanks Again Dan

Search the forum on this topic, been discussed many times. If memory serves, it's almost impossible to remove the passenger side head w/ studs. It's a pain with just bolts. Think about how far you have to lift the head to clear the studs.

Studs will definitely clamp better but when you blow a head gasket (and you will;) ) be prepared to pull the motor to replace it.
Of course, having done it a couple of times, pulling the motor may be easier than replacing it in the car anyway, so...

Just my .02

Hey Sinister,

Thanks for the reply. I am looking for the most clamping force. If I blow a head gasket on my car I would want to pull the motor out and check or go through it any way. The reason it is out now is because of a leaky head gasket. Does anybody know the correct part # for ARP Head studs for an 86-87 . thanks for the replys Dan

I should have the studs on the way for mine and if I remember correctly the part #'s are 123-4003 for the hex nut and 123-4203 for the 12 point.

Head Stud's!

CMyTFLy, ARP has stud's now that have an Allen hole at the top of the stud, no problem removing the pass. side head if you pop a gasket. I have the part # at work, i'll post it tomorrow if you need it.

allen heads or not, you'll likely ruin the stud getting it out

I use a combo of bolts and studs so the head removal is easier...

Hey Guys
Thanks for all the input. Hey turbobrain what is the differance between hex and 12 point? Any advantages from one to the other? Turbot231 if you do get the part # please pass it on. Where did you order your set from? Hey AZGN do you think by using bolt and studs the clamping force is different between the 2. Do you torque one higher than the other ?

Thanks Again Guys Dan

To be honest with you, I don't know if there is a difference other then the number of sides. Maybe some of the other fellas could shed some light. I just went with the six.

Hey AZGN
WHat If I Dont??? Please shed some light on the subject. what is the differance?? Come on I know you know. Please let us know. thanks Again Guys

ARP makes both "High Performance" bolts, and "Pro Series" bolts. the Pro Series is made from stronger steel, and comes ONLY with the 12 point head. The High Performance series is much stronger than the stock TTY bolts, and comes in EITHER the 6 point or the twelve point. So you have several choices. The 12 point heads, with a good fitting wrench, are less likely to "round off" than the 6 points, or so I am told. Some talented people can mess up either one.

That is funny (talented people) Thats funny. Hey thanks for the info and the laugh. Thanks Dan
