Either one is better than this one guy I run into around town every once in a while. Everytime I see him he asks about my International. I usually try not to be rude but sometimes I want to tell him, "Yeah, it sure looks like a f'in truck don't it."
Good thing I'm a nice guy.:biggrin:
They call me Mellow Yellow. Man thats neat. The 79-80 CTC is one of my favorite body styles.
It's only going to get worse(better?) as the years roll on. One of my "rules" is that "you should never own a car older than you are". You know there's been an entire generation out there that doesn't even know what owning a fast car let alone an American car is. You know the current "ricers" who have a Honda only because Mom has one, yada,yada. I have the same problem with the 40 somethings when I have my Vega.
I'm filling the GN up at the 7-11 across the street from my job the other day. One guy is across from me with an Astro and another is pumping his Lexus. The Astro guy says to me that you dont see them around anymore, especially clean ones like mine. The Lexus clown remarks that no wonder with gas at $3.00. The a$$clown just would not beleive that my GN got 25+ MPG. I made sure I timed the red lights right just so I could make him sweat to the entrance ramp of the interstate.
Oh man I get this one all the time "That thing must eat gas like crazy!"
to which I reply "Uh, not really, I get like 22 mpg. It's a stock v6 that only consumes more gas when I am making more boost than when it was stock, and that is not very often" I usually then have to explain that boost isn't ever present (amazingly, a commonly held belief) and that it comes with more gas pedal input.
This is probably the most pervasive form of ignorance. Anytime there is a car conversation with people that don't know much, they automatically assume for example that the Z06 corvette must get like 8 mpg. When I tell them LS1s get almost 30 mpg freeway they look at me like I just said pigs can fly. Apparently technological progress isn't something they have ever witnessed.

That's so funny. Guys at the local auto parts store call my WH1 an International. I start to laugh cause I think he's jokin but I'm usually the only one laughing. I guess it could be worse. I'm glad I'm not driving a Ferrari and someone calls it a VW Cabriolet. I'd be steamed.

Ignorant, not stupid. Identifying a TR isn't on many college entrance exams.
I mostly hear the Monte Carlo take on it.
I meant in general people are stupid:smile: Actually my car has never been mistaken for another, but I have been asked many times what it is- that may have to do with the fact that I always have the exhaust open. Nothing sounds like an uncapped Buick!
Tell your wife to ask them if they are treating their dyslexia. When people confuse J with 6 then it's time for treatment.

thats funny i had guys tell me, oooh, this is the special edition jiffy lube car, right?? i just laught..... but the one that really upsets me is the time i took my car down to the hobby shop here on post to work on my car, a guy came over while i was working on my car, he look at the car and looked at the engine and said..." Nice engine... Is it fast with that turbo?" ME; " Its not to bad ( been modest as always :biggrin: )" Him; " Why dont you put a V8 in it? It would be way much faster than that Turbo V6.." right then and there i lost all respect and motivation to talk to the guy...... but the sad part is he didnt get the clue, so he continue talking about how much power i can make witha V8, and blah blah blah... i didnt want to be rude to the guy, but he was pushing my buttons....so again i agreed with him, and told him i was going to put a Big Block 454 with a Carb... :biggrin: .....
But in a lighter note... I love the story's about this cars... Its like a myth, a living legend..... all some people know is that they are FAST..... it could be a stock car, and they still will think is the fastest car in the world...:biggrin: .. i have another story, after this one i promise ill stop..
... it was a tuesday when i purchased my Limited.. i was excited! i couldnt wait to take the car to the local track, but sadly it didnt open till thursday.:frown: . So finally thursday night came around. I picked up my buddy( who is the person that got me into TRs.) and drove down to the track. while inline to race, there was a 03-04 Cobra about 2 or 3 cars ahead of me. come to find out he knew my friend. so they start talking, the guys starts spitting out every mod he had done to his car (Cobra). i meen he had put lots of money into it, even up graded to a bigger blower. My buddy ask him " You want to race my friend?" He said , "who" my buddy; " My friend in the Turbo Buick" The guys walks over and starts staring my car up and down. he goes to the engine bay and start looking hard, as if he had lost something. My buddy walks over and says, " Well what you think?" He answers, " Dude, I dont even know what the F**k im lookng at!" Me and my frien start laughing hard.. My friend said lets race for a 100 bucks, so the guy walks away. I start talking to my friend, "Like you crazy!!! that cobra is way faster!" My friend is like " Dont worry he wont race you" sure enought the guy walks over and says, "Nah men, im cool, inknow the car looks stock but thats how all Turbo Buick look... No race" me and my friend just smile... just the name, the story's , the myth's of this car's won the race that day before it even started....:biggrin:

A few years ago I was getting gas, and I came hood-to-hood with a hotair GN. I was going to go and chat with the owner, but in Oregon they don't let you pump your own gas,
and the GN's attendant was asking how much the owner would let it go for. Owner gave him an earful about how rare it is, and it's in such good shape (it wasn't), and blahblahblah and he'd take $10k for it - cash only.
I open my hood to check the oil, and my attendant, who had gone over to the GN, comes back and his eyes get big. He reads the hood liner, does a few double-takes between the two cars, and then goes over to his buddy and taps him frantically on the shoulder, but gets the "leave me alone, I'm working on something" brush-off. He comes back to me and I give him a knowing shrug.
The GN owner ended up driving right by me WITH MY HOOD OPEN and never even acknowledged that another Turbo Buick was there. I wanted to catch him at a light, but the car was too thirsty...
Oh, and the other attendant worked the GN owner down to $8k by the end.

Theres nothing wrong with owning a car older than you. The car I had before the GN was a 1966 Corvette Stingray Convertible. It had a 327 with 350 HP. Black on black and I have never owned a car that was loved so much by young and old plus the chicks dug it! It was not really all that fast but it made up for it in looks.

Id rather it be confused with a 442 vs. a Monte. In my opinon the Monte is one of the ugliest cars ever made. Looks nothing like a GN.
