I spoke recently to one of the well known vendors on this site about the powermaster brakes.He informed me that there was a recall back in 87/88 on them.After i described what my unit looked like he said it appeared mine was never taken in for the recall!!!
I have no reason to doubt what he was telling me since i was calling to purchase parts to do the repairs.Anways i called Buick ,and they said if there was an open safety recall they would have to do the repairs. But their system does not go back past 1990.So anyone have this # or have info where to obtain.Thanks in advance.Carl
 
It won't do any good to try and get GM to do it because the parts required have been discontinued for years.
Pressure switch.
Accumulator.
 
Head of the service dept at local buick dealer said if there is an open recall by law they have to fix it,even if they have to get parts from vendors.The accumalator ball seems to be the culprit!

then just get the accum. ball and do it your self. saves time and makes sure things are done right. i dont want some punk kid messing with my ride.
 
I too had the same problem with my brake light and believe it was the recall issue. Here is the info on the recall; Brake Bleeding, Rear Cylinders, and Linelock Install

Hope I posted that correctly for you.

I went to the local GM dealer and they couldnt find anything on it in their computer. No info on the recall or anything. My brother-in-law works at another GM dealer and same thing. He took it to work one day and even called someone at HQ to check further. At this point I would not let a GM dealer work on my car. If you can, find someone that knows what they are doing and you will be way ahead. My brother-in-law told me he will never take my GN back to the dealership because of all the pukes that had there greasy hands all over it.

Thanks for the info thtat's what i was looking for.My son-in-law is the tech that will be performing the work,and he knows how i am about this car,so no worries there.
 
Hey thats a 20 YO recall. Good luck on the accumulator as it wasn't part of the recall.Buick aint obligated to replace it in other words. Only the pressure swith was and thats still available.If it has a gray top than forget about it. They are only supposed to replace the black top parts.

Damn, that would be great if the accumulator was on the recall. I've got receipts going back to 90. Think of all of the money.

The dealer has access to the recall information. They need to enter 87 Regal and than look for the PM recall in the bulletins area of the system. Theres only like 4 or 5 recalls for the Regal in 87 so they shouldn't have any problem finding it under campaigns.

IF LEFT UNCORRECTED THESE VEHICLES MAY EXPERIENCE A "HARD BRAKE PEDAL" OR "INCREASED BRAKE PEDAL TRAVEL". SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. INSPECT PRESSURE SWITCH. IF THE CURRENT PRESSURE SWITCH IS GRAY, MOVE ON TO STEP 2. IF THE CURRENT SWITCH IS BLACK, REMOVE AND REPLACE PRESSURE SWITCH ACCORDING TO THE PROCEDURE BELOW AND THEN MOVE ON TO STEP 2.

A. DEPRESSURIZE POWERMASTER UNIT BY TURNING IGNITION "OFF", AND APPLY AND RELEASE BRAKE PEDAL A MINIMUM OF TEN (10) TIMES USING APPROXIMATELY FIFTY (50) POUNDS OF FORCE ON PEDAL TO FULLY DEPLETE THE POWER ASSIST.

NOTICE: FAILURE TO FULLY DEPRESSURIZE POWERMASTER UNIT COULD RESULT IN BRAKE FLUID BEING SPRAYED ON SERVICE PERSONNEL AND COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO PAINTED SURFACES.

B. DISCONNECT 3-WIRE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIG. 1, 40) FROM PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1).

C. REMOVE OLD PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1).

D. LUBRICATE NEW O-RING (FIG. 1, 2) WITH CLEAN, FRESH BRAKE FLUID AND INSTALL ON NEW PRESSURE SWITCH.

E. INSTALL NEW PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1), TIGHTEN TO 20-27 NM (15-20 LB. FT.).

NOTICE: TORQUE VALUES SPECIFIED ARE FOR DRY, UNLUBRICATED FASTENERS.

F. RECONNECT 3-WIRE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIG. 1, 40) TO PRESSURE SWITCH (FIG. 1, 1). BE SURE ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR IS SECURELY SEATED.

2. LOCATE COMBINATION VALVE (ON FRAME RAIL BELOW MASTER CYLINDER). IF THE CURRENT COMBINATION VALVE IS THE POTENTIALLY FAULTY CAST IRON VALVE TYPE THE VALVE MUST BE REPLACED WITH A BRASS VALVE TYPE BY FOLLOWING THE PROCEDURE BELOW. IF THE VEHICLE ALREADY HAS THE BRASS VALVE, THE COMBINATION VALVE DOES NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED. PROCEED TO STEP 3. FIGURE 2 ON THE NEXT PAGE ILLUSTRATES THE DIFFERENCES IN THE TWO VALVE TYPES.

A. REMOVE THE ELECTRICAL WARNING HARNESS CONNECTOR FROM THE PRESSURE DIFFERENTIAL SWITCH BY SQUEEZING THE ELIPTICAL-SHAPED PLASTIC LOCK RING AND PULLING UP. A PAIR OF PLIERS MAY AID IN REMOVING THE CONNECTOR.

B. DISCONNECT HYDRAULIC LINES AT COMBINATION VALVE. PLUG LINES TO PREVENT LOSS OF FLUID AND ENTRANCE OF DIRT.

C. REMOVE POTENTIALLY FAULTY CAST IRON COMBINATION VALVE.

D. INSTALL BRASS COMBINATION VALVE. TORQUE MOUNTING BOLTS TO 20 NM (14 LB. FT.).

E. CONNECT WARNING HARNESS SWITCH TO VALVE SWITCH TERMINAL.

F. REMOVE PLUGS AND CONNECT HYDRAULIC LINES AT COMBINATION VALVE. TORQUE LINES TO 24 NM (18 LB. FT.).

G. CONNECT ELECTRICAL WARNING HARNESS CONNECTOR TO PRESSURE CONTROL DIFFERENTIAL SWITCH.

H. BLEED ENTIRE BRAKE SYSTEM. DO NOT MOVE VEHICLE UNTIL A FIRM BRAKE PEDAL IS OBTAINED.

I. CHECK BRAKE LINES FOR PROPER CLEARANCES.

3. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

EACH VEHICLE CORRECTED IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE INSTRUCTIONS OUTLINED IN THIS PRODUCT CAMPAIGN BULLETIN WILL REQUIRE A "CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL." EACH LABEL PROVIDES A SPACE TO INCLUDE THE FIVE (5) DIGIT DEALER CODE OF THE DEALER PERFORMING THE CAMPAIGN SERVICE. THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.

I tried to get a PM recall fix for my first GN and they couldnt do anything about it, I even had that recall sheet and talked directly to a GM representative. They pretty much just shrugged me offf and said they didnt have that info, even though I read it to them and then faxed it to the lady. Nothing ever came of it.
 
The tsb i was referring to is: 87513B dated FEB 1993.but i can't find any info on it,i found it once but cannot find again?.
TURBOFISH: my pressure switch is gray palstic on the bottom with a black wiring harness on top.Also how do you tell if the valve is brass or?
 
They are obligated by law to fix the switch if its the black one. The combo valve was only recalled on Canadian cars. If you have a GN that was sold in the U.S. you are not eligible for the recall. I went through this years ago. The brass combo valve is still around if you look hard enough.

You can tell if the valve is brass or iron by looking at it. It will look like corroded brass if its brass and rusty if its iron:tongue: .
 
Brass prop valve is part number 25509419 and it is discontinued. You have the gray switch and it has been replaced at least once. Sounds like what ever you want will not be replaced under the recall anyway. That TSB is just the revised diagnostics for the PM. IIRC there is a reprint of it over at Turbo Regal Web Site .
