MAACO is always a hit or miss. I have had 2 done there many years ago. One I provided the paint, and they reduced it down so far the red was pinkish...they are used to making little material go far. The other issue is a drunk monkey can tape better than the one I used. Really.
Outside that, IF you can prep 100% of the car to a "tack cloth" stage, and provide quality materials and be sure they know how to mix them, the painter should be able to spray it.
I always like the do it all yourself method, but that simply doesn't work for everyone. Know where you need to draw the line.....and stick to it.

Yeah, MAACO is touch and go, and nowhere to go if you want real quality.

But here is how my paint progression went.

-Paint some motorcycles
-Painted a few buddies POS car.
-Paint my old 86 T-type

Always wise to learn on a POS.

MAACO??? No chance. Don't forget how they will take turns beating the hell out of your car. Unhook the MAF, turn down the boost, they will figure it out. Maybe pull the motor and push it down there...........

The thing that i am finding out is that u do the car it is going to be lots of time.Most paint that u use gives u time limits on the recoat because if u wate to long to recoat u will have to sand it to open the pores. This is also true with the use of primes too. So i say that u had better take some vac. time and take a week to do it.

Sorry to bring this thread back.

I finally got time to dig around one of my servers and locate these. This is a '95 S10 CPI HO truck that I used to own. I did all the work myself in my carport... yes, I hung plastic and made a nice side draft paint booth. All paint is House Of Kolor. I used the some of the burple and violet Kandy basecoats mixed together. The hood, doors, bed and tailgate were all removed for painting so there weren't any tape lines on the blue color. All trim was removed for painting. Notice the shaved handles and sport mirrors.

After I shot it, I sanded each part down with 1000 grit and blew down another three coats of flow clear and then sanded and buffed that. it really stayed clean as I kept the floor damp and took time to clean everything prior to shooting. The flames came later, back when they were in style.

Sorry, this was taken when 1.3 mega pixel cameras were the best around.

Lots of time.

I even color sanded and buffed my door jambs. It was around 40 hours of polishing the exterior. In the end, it was still an S10. Although I would always get compliments on the paint and stuff, It's value was always going down. I sold it and put that money into a GN. At least I have something other than a flashy paint job on a truck now. I so look forward to doing the same type of things to the Buick.

I was wondering if any of you guys knew anything about it.

The Brand is Akzo Nobel Alumigrip...It's aircraft paint.

Check out NASON paints.... they are pretty cheap. I priced a gallon of Light Saphire Metallic Blue at O'Reilly auto parts. It was only $78. They are division of dupont. worth a shot.

Maybe not so cheap.

My brother was wanting a cheap paint job for his probe and put nason on it. He learned real quick, there is a reason it's so cheap. I had him buy DuPont Chroma single stage for another car. He was amazed and how two paints could spray completely different. The Chroma system is almost silky smooth when it goes on. There is no comparison when it comes to longevity of the paint either. Talk to some of the guys who shoot cars at some of the custom shops. They will tell you that it isn't going to cost $500 a gallon for really good paint. Just try to spend more than $50 on it. It's worth the extra money to not have to strip the thing down in a year or two because the paint doesn't hold up.

I shot a Camry wagon a few years ago. All the materials including a gallon of Chroma single stage, gallon of primer and supplies came in just under $450. I had material left over and still got a great paint job out of it. The primer was polyester, avoid any lacquer anything, unless you are just doing a very small spot repair on an otherwise pristine TR that you don't want to have to take down to metal.
