The thing is, some cars will work without using relays, but MOST wont. The wiring in our GN is aging in a big way, and picking up resistance along the way. The "startup" demand for the HID ballasts puts us in the relay-needed category. Otherwise, the HID's use less current than the standard halogen bulbs. It's that startup that gets you. Low battery, high surge, and the bulbs just flicker instead of coming on.

The startup on a typical ballast lasts around 50-200 milliseconds, just enough for the power sag to prevent the lamps from striking the arc. Now, if the bulb doesn't start, there is an internal spark gap in the ballast that absorbs the high voltage energy (at least there is in the Philips boxes). Problem is, the spark gap doesn't last very long, eventually allowing the high energy to self-destruct the low voltage internal components. Then you have a melt-down. So, strong voltage at startup is absolutely necessary.

If you ever see your headlights start to flicker, it's telling you that you need relays. But usually by then it's too late.

I never thought to put mine on relays to be honest, but seems like a decent idea. If your charging system is up to par I wouldnt be super concerned. I wouldnt park the car over it in other words. I have 15 months of driving mine every day, using the hids every day and never an issue. I even use them during daylight half the time. ;)
 
I am going to put relays on just for peace of mind,anyone know the best place to get them?I also had mine on for my daylight drive yesterday,just because I knew how cool they look!lol:cool:
 
I never thought to put mine on relays to be honest, but seems like a decent idea. If your charging system is up to par I wouldnt be super concerned. I wouldnt park the car over it in other words. I have 15 months of driving mine every day, using the hids every day and never an issue. I even use them during daylight half the time. ;)
It's not only the charging system being up to par, it has to do with the hid's drawing all that power on start up from the headlight switch and factory wiring, eventually the factory wiring will fail because of the constant power draw on start up from the hid lights. A simple $10-15.00 dollar relay will prevent this from happening, and you will be drawing power from the battery on start up not the headlight switch and wiring.

Oh no, I agree with you it is the smart way to do it, just haven't made time to do it.
 
OK I have been stalking this thread for a while. I have Stanley Ecode (Eurpoean) low beam housings and Cibie Hi beam housings. With 70/65 W+30 HO H4 bulbs. The highs are 100W. I have some relays and the Caspers Headlight Brightener. I am VERY happy with them. The brights are "daylight". Lows are good with a very sharp cutoff. All 4 bulbs come on when I have the brights on. The housings that Peter sells are very similiar (and probably the same) as what I have. Anyone who drives their car more than 30MPH at night and still uses the 4656 sealed beam is INSANE :p The lows are pretty good but I think I could do a little better, sooooo I ordered the Hi/Low H4 kit from Peter and will post my results. This is what I have now (the before HID video):

 
I'll comment on a few things later tonight, I'm pretty buried right now but wanted to mention that

With regards to the relay. Some of the kits we have do come with a relay/power wire such as the special kit GNICETRY has. I'm sure we can add one to kits if wanted as an option. We've been doing these for years and as I think mentioned in the thread.

so...why don't john and peter get together and make one kit?
or peter can have an option on his website for the caspers upgrade harness option?
I would like to see start up and running videos of the lights with and without the caspers kit...
sorry if I am sticking my nose in where it don't belong...just seems like it could be a good relationship...
 
And stay tuned... In a few weeks there will probably be a thread about a Pypes exhaust system install I just ordered. :)
got the Pypes system on mine an love it, quite at idle and like it has no mufflers when opened up, and the sound is awesome! absolutely no drone from exhaust at all inside car... by far the best exhaust Ive had on mine...

Just ordered a set from Peter yesterday. Just hope that John Spina will help us here in showing us some diagram as to how the relays fit in........I believe some 30 amp relays will be fine, though I'm not sure.....I need to know, as the rest of us with this HID system how many relays are required.

I'd like to ask the guy who wired his HID system to have all four HID lights come on when you hit th high beams to please come forward and tell me how he did it.......Peter mentioned someone on this forum wired his to operate this way and that's what I'd like to do, too.

So, John, would you be kind enough to come forward and tell us how to wire in the relays to the HID set? We all sure would appreciate your help.

And the guy who has the four light set-up when high beams are on....will you show me how to wire mine up the way you did?

That's what this forum is all about..........helping each other out when there's a question, problem or just plain need help........you've never failed dweebs like me.:confused:

To the guys who showed the HID light comparisions via pictures and videos....thanks a million! That's what sold me on Peter's system. And a big thanks to Peter, who owns the company that sells these lights, for all the help so far.

Actually I supplied the relay system years ago, and it's since gone obsolete. It used a pair of relays, one connector from the passenger side headlight ran the system and there was a small "keep-alive" diode that would run the low beam (HID) relay when the high beam relay was energized. That way, all four lights would run at the same time on high. The relay harness was packaged with the HID kits of that era...long gone now.

So how do we fix it? Or who has a relay kit that will work and fix it
 
OK so after reading a bunch of these posts.I am getting more confused on what to do. I am just putting in the low beam kit. Do I need to use a relay or not?
