General Question:

I'm looking at repainting my 87 GN and need some help. I live in Tampa FL. The car has the original paint on it from 87 and I would need to strip it down, sand it and then repaint. How much am I looking at to do a very good job?

How many coats of black do you suggest?

Any special paint suggestions and/or different shades of black that stand out better?

For example I have an 04 GTO as well, and the Phantom Black paint on that is more dull than other brilliant blacks I've seen on cars.

Thank you in advance for your help

Nick

Go to some good body shops and talk to them. Look at their work. Not just display stuff but regular cars waiting for pickup. See if you can pick out their work. (on the cars waiting for pickup) If you can, find another shop. I don't have allot of body experience but I wouldn't think 10-12k would be unreasonable for what it sounds like you're talking about at a good shop.

Have you buffed out the GTO? Check out the Mequire's site. They have a forum on buffing and pictures of some nice results on stock paint jobs. As far as the GN, like BB said check out several local bodyshops. You can get some leads by going to cruise nights and asking people that have nice paint jobs where they got them done.

Depends on how much of the basic disassembly/reassembly you want to do yourself, but 5 grand for a showstopping black repaint where some monir bodywork may be involved is not outo f the question.

To do it right it will cost some $. Seek out someone who has painted a GN before. Take a look at their work. I would have it completely media blasted if there is any checking in the factory paint. There is usually a lot. The body work is the next culprit and more important than anything else imo. Single stage urethane works out well. Car should be dark black and look wet when done. Ive seen a lot of black clear coated cars get the hazy look. Dont be fooled by the amount spent. Its easy to spend a lot of $ and get ok or $hitty work. You will never get a cheap job that is acceptable on one of these though. Plan on spending $5-6k if you want it nearly perfect. $3-4k for a decent job. Under $3k will not get you far on one of these unless the body was perfect to start with and only needed stripping and painting. These prices are assuming you are paying a shop to do it on the table and not having your best friend who is a great body man spend 50+ hrs prepping the car for paint for a small fee. If you get a deal like this you can save thousands and have a really good result:biggrin:

Thats funny how we quoted the same approx cost within 2 minutes of each other. We were both typing at the same time.

first race I've ever won!!

But seriously: teh two biggest budget eaters: the materials themselves and the labeor for taking every last piece of trim off and putting back on (assuming no major issues with the sheet metal itself). 800-1000 for the materials alone is not unheard of. If you take as much off of the car as you can (grille, lights, moldings, etc but you do want to leave the glass in for now) and take as bare a shell as you can to the blasters (avg $500) and then to the painters, and then put it all back together yourself that will save you a pretty good piece of change.
