i couldn't agree more! can't be a tight ass racing buicks no matter the yr model.

What i would like to see is a proper;y set-up hot-air that tuned in correctly. swapped out there aftermarket/ hand made headers for a set of the stockers to just see how big of a hp/ airflow restriction they are. With a larger uppipe and a dwonpipe i can't see how they really differ from the 86-87 units.

Has anyone actually done a back pressure test? ( no i don't mean calculateded either) using a stock set of headers? this would provide a clue as to whats really going on.

Thats What id like to know, even going far enough to see if the cast manifolds had a flow effect as well. I couldnt agree more!

I am still working on the properly part. o_O

When I welded up the headers about 3 years ago, a provision for BP testing was added.
Just have never gotten around to testing BP . . . although I doubt is will be high at 13-15psi and a T350 wheel.

I do not believe BP can be calculated to any useful accuracy since there are just way too many variables that cannot be controlled.
Maybe someday it will be high enough on the priority list and I will actually test it . . . . .

I'd like to see a back pressure test myself just to see whether it's restrictive or not.

Posting to subscribe but I do have a few words to say.

I have a 204-214 cam, ported heads, opened up secondary air valves, custom made 2.5" dp, catless pypes race pro exhaust and my car is a dog partly because its a carb turbo but more because I have a 2.41 and tight converter. If I swapped the top end to a 86/87 setup Id have the heads and cam for solid 11's but I'm too stubborn. Id be hard pressed to run a 16 second quarter the way it spools now. Have 3.42's and a 200R4 but I haven't thrown it in yet. Spool is measured in years from a dig. If I go from a 30MPH roll it spools up fast.

That being said I replaced the cast CT manifolds with HA tubular manifolds and it didnt help the spool one but. However, It boost creeps up to 13 PSI, wastegated at 8. It feels the same up to 3PSI but once it goes over that it goes! Feels like it finds 100HP between 2PSI and 4PSI. Never did that with the cast manifolds. I did clean up the inside of the manifolds by cutting out the overlap between the main log and the runners. If you have never looked in yours you might be surprised. Half of that is probably the inconsistent fueling of the carb but its food for thought.

Just some FYI on the cast manifolds. There are two sizes. The 1979/80 manifolds are big, like the 83/85 tube headers. The 81/82 is smaller. This might help: http://www.beforeblack.net/exhaust.htm

The 79/80 cast manifolds won't crack and will retain the heat better. And they will directly swap with the 83/85 manifolds.

I remember way back someone runing the 81/82 manifolds on a 4.1 Hot Air engine. They helped spool up by keeping the exhaust velocity high.
