2 Quick questions:

1. If I buy a turbo for my hot air, then convert to IC'ed later, will it still work?

2. What are some of the turbos being run by hot air cars with similar mods? When I look at turbos, it seems like most of them are only for 86-87 and "may fit other years/models".

85 GN 3.8 +.030 over, Poston 107T cam and hi-rev lifters, HV oil pump, Ron Anderson ported/ big valve irons, port matched hot air intake, 37# injectors, Poston headers, up pipe, crossover, 2 ½” dual exhaust with warlock mufflers, Accufab ADJFPR, 37# injectors, unknown extender chip, Adj wastegate, cold air w/14” K&N, dual VC breathers, Tlink v4.......

Hey there. To answer your questions about turbo's, 86/7 style will work on a hotair car with some slight modifications. Biggest issue is to reclock the compressor housing, and connection the turbo outlet to the intake inlet. TA is your best bet for turbo's. And yes if you buy a turbo for a hotair and intercool it later, you can use the same turbo. I bought a TA33 for my car when I thought I was going to stay hotair. I have since intercooled, and it works great with the setup. You can even use the stock hotair turbo on an intercooler setup, however it will run out of steam at higher Rpm ranges. The only 2 issues that will prevent you from running all kinda turbo's on a hotair is hood clearence issues, and being able to mount the throttlebody on the turbo if it is a TE series turbo. The nice thing about hotairs, is that there are so many options for these cars, from mild to wild. Take a look at the pics of my car and the intercooler setup I run, and that might give you some ideas. Also If you're planning on intercooling and you're making all the plumbing and piping yourself, theres hundreds of avenues you can go through to achieve your goal. Hope this helps. :)

Reclocking only involves turning the two halves to align differently, correct? And what about connecting the turbo outlet to the intake inlet? Will it not use the original "bell" for connecting? Why TA and not TE? TE's have different mounting bolts?

I am asking because I am looking at a TE44. But if it will be a pain I may go with something else. What else is more or less a bolt in for the hot air???

If I am going to spend the $, I want the turbo to be pretty closely matched to my combo in sig, no sense going too small or too large.

Like I said earlier, I am most likely going to swap to 87 setup later, I am already collecting the parts. But I want a turbo to fit both. If this is not possible, then what are my choices for the hot air setup?

Hot air Turbo's

I just purchased a hot air engine (That I don't have yet.) so pardon my ignorance on this... But what is so difficult about adding an intercooler or after market turbo to these hot air cars?

I know that the turbo bolts right to the throttle body and intake manifold. And I know that many of the turbo's do not have the same intake and exhaust geometery that prevents these from lining up. I also realize that there is a limitation on the amount of room under a stock hood.

If I'm putting this motor into another car without clearance problems, is there anything that is going to keep me from running a turbo intended for an 86/87? I under stand that there is going to be alignment complications. so I'll probably weld up a new exhaust setup.

I assume that these turbo's are running oil lines back to the block. Aside from that is there anything keeping this turbo mounted directly on top of the intake manifold?

Thanks for the help,
-J

Turbo on top

Only other concern with the turbo on a hotair motor is that the charged air enters the intake from the back on top. The turbo plugs right into it.
