I'm contemplating an upgrade to a TE 45A turbo, and was just wondering how bad it would be on my convertor, its like 3200 stall. Its a 9.5 inch PI Vigilante. It spools my ta 62 like crazy, just wondered what to expect, if I could get away with it for awhile. If not, what stall do I need? Thanks!

you'll need to loosen it a bit.......3600 minimum....I have a 3200 PI in my car now and it is bad news.........my "6" pump PI would spool to 4000 in 2 yellow lites.....this one needs to be staged at 2000 and still won't get by 3600 at launch

changing converters soon (had to have the "0" pump rebuilt...)

I'm running a 9.5 single disck PI Vigilante as well. Any idea which one it is? At 5# boost on the DirectScan (before I see any acceleration), I'm getting 4000-4100 RPM.

I'd also like to step up to something like a 45 or maybe a 70.

Thanks,
-Banning.

1/2 the reason people have to buy new converters is actually because the Accleration Enrichment is marginal to begin with in the chip, and changing turbos worsens that. ie the looser converter allows the motor to spin up faster with less load, and that gets you past the lean spot.

Look at the number of postings even for stock setups about off idle stumbles.

Goin' back to a "6" pump? ;)

I have a TE-45A with a Art Carr 19930 that stalls approx. 3400-3500. My turbo spools like crazy and I can easily hit 10+PSI boost before launching(which is usually more than my slicks can handle).

I was actually thinking of tightening the converter up just a tad but will prob. leave it alone.

With your cam and head combo, you should be able to spool it up no problem. You'll just have to tune it a bit.

Go for it Sam,,you will hit that goal for sure...

Also Sam I will be first in line for your TA62:D :D

Running a 9.5 PI Vigilante non-lockup. Staging on the brake, I see 3400 at 0 psi and there is about a second delay as the turbo builds boost then at 6psi I am at about 4000 RPM and launch at approx 8-9psi at 4200. This is also a 76 4 bolt .81 tiang housing. You should be fine with a bigger turbo.

I had to drop VE#'s in the lower RPM/kpa range and retard timing to get things to work as well as they do. I still feel there is improvements to be had with tuning(spoolup). I would consider trying to loosen the convertor a little bit, but that will sacrifice slippage %. I am going to see what happens with the new motor first.

Thanks guys! My buddy has one I'm gonna borrow, so I'll know for sure. I'm not real clear on how to tell how well its spooling on the street. Just hit the brakes, give it gas, and see what it will come to? I should just buy the darn thing, I can always restall the convertor. Any one got John Craigs # by chance? Also, whats a fair price for my ta 62? Its like new, maybe 1500 miles, its a pretty awesome turbo, and I think 10's are attainable with it, I just it to be easier, cuz I don't get to the track very often. Its easier to build a low ten second combo and run high tens. So whats this turbo worth? I can't even remember what I paid.
