How many are left?

Still a bunch.. a better question is how many T's are left!
Unfortunetly, there is no way of knowing, and will probably never be no way of knowing how many are left. We do however know how many where produced. For instance, my 84 GN is one of only 500, and I know that because this guy here says so. 1984, BUICK, GRAND NATIONAL
dont have any idea, but I could venture. fortunatly when these cars were built it seems most people knew they were something special. almost in instant collector car, id say maybe. for that reason most have probally been well taken care of, how many junk GNs do you see for sale???, I would venture to say most are probally still out there somewhere. at least thats what I hope

Negative. Comparatively speaking, NOONE knew what they were. They STILL dont. I mean come on. If im at a car show, and i still get a good number of people coming up to the car, saying 'what the hell is that?'...and im in DETROIT? after TWENTY YEARS?
yea... noone knows what these cars are. gm did a HORRIBLE job marketing these cars.... which is the EXACT reason theyre so often abused. An accurate estimate, is to say about half are gone now. (real grand nationals)
In my area.. i see more trashed, than I do driveable. Theres 4 just sitting, rotting at my mechanics place alone. I mean, these cars are nowhere NEAR going anywhere soon. theyre done. kaput. finito. finished.
and thats when i started hangin out at the place, about a year ago or so. my mechanic says allllll SORTS of people just straight up abandon their buicks at his shop...straight away. it simply amazes me.
then theres the wrecks, the ones that are stolen and parted out.
then theres the...well... 'locals' (in the middle of detroit. im sure you can imagine) that take these cars, paint em pearlescent, metalflake, candyapple green, purple or blue, throw 20 inch rims on em, and yank the engines and put in 350 chevys. then theres these guys.

Id say, theres about 14,900 grand nationals left right now. Thats the 84-87's. and for 81-87 buick regals, with turbos (t types, and gn's overall) there were 53,734. so about 26,867 turbo regals worldwide. thats my estimate. noone (but some of us of course) takes care of their regals man. theyre rotting all over the world.

Right off the bat, figure 33% are gone.

I'd guestimate at least 50% of them are still out there in one form or another. Thats pretty good because the only thing that kept the number that high is the fact that a lot of us kept them as special interest cars instead of DDs. I'd venture to say that the 3rd gen Camarobirds couldn't even boast of a number higher than 40%. What I'm basing my figures from is the fact that the average car on the road is 13-14 years old. What that tells me is that half of the cars out there are older than 13 YO. The youngest GN is 20 YO now so you kind of have to draw a chart with a declining rate comparable to that fact. I would even venture to say that another 10 years from now that figure might be 45% as every year the number of DDs are either junked or move to the special interest side. You know another thing I look at is when somebody approaches me and is clueless as to what the car is. I pay attention to the age. If they are under 40 than they were probally teenagers when the cars were new. How many of us gave a chit about cars when we couldn't drive? Under 20 and than they were just a twinkle in the eye or still packing mud in thier Pampers.

In my opinion...............out of the 25000+ (86, 87) GN's produced I think about 50-60% are left after many being beat-down, stolen, wrecked, and raced hard. Out of the remaining I think about 30% are in truly nice, clean non-abused condition. There is a lot of "junk" out there.
I think its a even worse situation for the "T's". Out of about 10,000+ produced I think only 40-30% are left due to the same reasons plus being a little less known/desireable when new. Out of the remaing I think about 10 -20% are in real nice, non-abused shape. Not many kept nice thru the years, everything was more promoted towards the GN.
Again just my opinion................
