cleaning a TB engine compartment sucks!!! :biggrin: :biggrin:

I used some engine degreaser to hit the inner fenders and wheel well areas, firewall, core support, and motor, etc. I then douched it down, and then scrubbed with soap and water. The whole engine compartment still had a brownish-black look to it. Any suggestions on how to spruce things up, short of a full restoration?? Thanks.

After you have completely cleaned the compartment you can spray the whole thing with tire shine. That is what the dealerships do to make the compartment sparkle. I never would have believed it if I had not seen it in person.

problem with doing that is it collects dust/dirt quick when you do that.

After a good cleaning, I like to spray the engine compartment with a 50/50 solution of glass cleaner/armor all. I just mix up the solution in an empty bottle with a spray nozzle, then liberally spray it in the engine compartment and let it dry. The glass cleaner helps to clean a bit, and with the armor all being diluted it leaves a nice clean, but not overly shiny appearance. Just be careful spraying the solution by your drive belt, as it doesn't like the slippery armor all (don't ask me how I know).

:biggrin: +1 on the simple green for a wonderful clean engine bay. A good spray for a great "after glow" is ARD-472 PRO SHINE. Leaves a nice suttle shine. It is a clear silicone spray. It does not collect dust. I buy it from a car dealer detail supply vendor. :biggrin:

I've had good results with Simple Green.

Simple green, purple power and super clean are all very corrosive to aluminum. If you read the back it will even say to avoid prolonged exposher to aluminum. I like to use dish soap and water in a spray gun that runs off the air compressor.

I used to work as a shop forman for an 18 wheeler shop (Groendyke Transport) and we used Alumabright. It's an acid so you spray it on and spray it off within @ 4 mins. Thats how they keep those HUGE tank trailers clean. If you leave it on to long it will turn polished alunimum(sp?) kinda white. The stuff will remove ALL gunk. Good Luck Jon Hanson

what i do is i cover up the coil pack and the alt. then i warm the engine somewhat then spray everything down with WD-40 i let the wd-40 sit for about 5-10 mins then i use a fine coat of simple green on it then rinse it off. leave everything nice and clean.


the silicone tire shine that advance auto use to sell works great as a engine detailer as it dries so it don't leave a greasy film.

I spray engine degreaser right onto a rag away from my car. Then I scrub everything down with that. I come in next with the simple green to clean off the rest of the gunk and the degreaser. Wipe that down real good. Then I spray Formula 2001 right onto the rag away from the car, hit everything and then wipe that off with a dry towel.

This would be what I do from scratch. Once you get it clean I just hit every other week or so with the simple green if needed and the F2K1. The first cleaning takes me the better part of the day and uses about 3 rolls of blue towels.
