I am ALSO thinking ogf moving to Texas in a year or so. The economy in texas is holding up well and jobs are plentiful at the moment, I am thinking of either moving to Chorpus Christi, or Houston near the gulf.

what is the average/mean price of a house, are houses pretty cheap, jobs, any good/bad neighborhoods, religous wackos, (id say Bush but id have to move this thread to the political section:biggrin:) anything else I should know... (p.s. I know ALOT more about LA than texas and am more familiar with it.)

from a texan

i live in fort worth, which is roughly 45 miles from dallas with arlington in the middle. several million people in all the suburbs around here with alot of places to see, shop, eat and well just enjoy. weather here isn't too bad, summer gets to roughly 110 in the middle of the summer without the heat index. and it'll snow maybe once a yr and ice manybe a handfull of times if we're lucky. just like any big town or towns, you have your bad and good neighborhoods. alot of good companies here, including bell, lockheed, and just about anything you can think of. My stepson lives in houston now but is about to come home, i have kin that live there and they like it, alittle to close to the coast for me. if you don't remember let me remind you it's roughly 40 miles from the coast and got a heck of a flooding when ike came to town. check youtube for video's, if you like living by the coast then you can try corpus, my mom is from there and it's just real small, and REAL close to the border which means alot more hispanics and real mexicans, tighter job market and jobs that pay less because of low waged people. Learn to habla some spanish as most places here have both and if you are in a predominately hispanic neghborhood then you better speak it or don't order your food ( JK, but it helps ) and i'm not fluent but i understand alittle and speak alittle and i'm hispanic. Houston is alot more muggier, humid, drivers there are crazy, and i mean speed limit is 80 if your moving at all or you'll be rearended. houston has alot of steep gutters right next to the street that run the full lenght and if you have to swerve to miss a bad driver kiss your car goodbye. just a few things off the top of my head, i know i'm biased towards my town but i'm just giving you my experiance and i've lived here all my life and have traveled through out texas. let me know if you have any other ?'s and there is a local group of guys that i haven't caught up to yet, lone star buick club. they meet up about 1 time a month and are freindly from what i heard. now if anyone from corpus or houston want to chime in now's your chance.

If you think Bush is a religious whacko, you might want to stay where you are.

Just sayin'...

If you're from the West Coast, move to the Left Coast (Austin), you will assimilate easier.
George W. and George H.W. Bush are NOT really Texans.
It will be too hot & humid here for you.
If you do come, don't try to change everything. We don't care how you do things up North, back East, out West or wherever you think things are better.
Use Realtor.com for home prices.
Not everybody is running around wearing a cowboy hat. Mostly urban population now.
Buying a pair of jeans and boots will not make you a Texan.
Texas has the same per centage of religious fanatics as your state. People are allowed to go to church, if they so desire, without being labeled fanatics.
It's starting to get crowded down here. Lots of low paying jobs available.
Texas is allowed to split itself into 5 states, not secede constitutionally.
Texas may declare sovereignity if Washington (D.C.) doesn't get their act together.
The Texas electrical Power Grid is mostly separate from the rest of the U.S.
Last summer had about 42 days of summer over 100*.
2 or 3 summers ago, it never got over 100* (unusual).
What else do you want to know?

ok now how about someone from Htown

there you go, got a response from austin, hookem horns, and go horned frogs. I really like austin, real close to alot of things to do including tubing down the guadalupe, ALOT of outlets in new braunsfels, and san antonio less then 60 miles away. Coast is about a 2.5 hr drive, if you prefer the coast. also don't take any of the cities your saw on a post card and think it's like that. if you want to get an idea of what it's like come down before you move down here and check out a few towns. heck i would show you around DFW alittle if you wanted. i'm sure some fellow TBer's would also help with some pointers and offer the same. regardless sure we have low wages but we also have alot of great reasons to stay. we have the same amount of crap here that any other state and city has. as far as that bush comment i didn't vote for him and don't care much for him. just glad he's gone, and yes he does have a house in dallas where they are putting a library up in his honor. like that fool ever cracked a book open, i'm sure he did to use it as a place to roll up a fatty, not that i would know you could do that.;) that's a long hop skip and jump from where you reside now.

So, when are y'all coming on down? Give me ring, we'll open up a can of beans for yuh.

Ditto on Turbotwin2.

Do you realize why the state of Washington sucks (or why people want to move away and sometimes do/don't know why)? Seems like we have a few members from Washington here.

The have a tax on REVENUES! meaning.. they tax businesses on the selling price of goods.. regardless of whether the company can cover its costs. How is anyone ever supposed to get ahead? Let's have a state (country or region) that is is anti-business that you have to not make anything in that state and import everything. Seems like no money can stay in the state. It's a wonder about the high-tech companies are there. Probably make so much money they don't care about taxes.

I'd rather have religulous over ridiculous.

If Texas does succede can I apply for a green card? Other than NC, Texas is one of the few states I've been to that I would consider moving to. And I've been to 3/4 of them for extended periods of time.

What do you intend to do for a living?

Houston is a big place. And with it come the problems of a highly populated area. I lived there 2 years and got enough to know I didn't want to live there any more.

My wife and I like the DFW Metroplex area so we came back here. There are jobs and the oil and gas drilling is starting to swing up again. Lots to do for entertainment.

Come for a visit and see how you like it.

Another tip from a coastal resident, you WILL NOT LIKE hurricanes. Trust me on this and do everything possible to avoid living in hurricane alley.

Man I've lived in washington my whole life, I had a 10 hour lay over at DFW this summer. Went outside at 4:30AM and INSTANTLY became drenched in sweat.. This place seemed like a nightmare, my legs stuck together and the water tasted like DIRT!!

Houston is 2X sweatier than DFW, if not more so. We had a couple weeks last summer where it only went down to the upper 80's at night... must have been when you came, but the rest of this year appears to be below normal.

The water sucks around the airport and in Euless and Grapevine (the bordering towns), but tastes like actual water 5 minutes from the airport where I live. When I lived next to the airport in Euless, we had a water cooler and bottled water.

We do that to our water to scare off outsiders, otherwise we'd be overrun with them.

what are you planning for a living? Corpus is sort of limited. DFW/Houston are the best bets for work really.

funny

that's funny we do that to the water, honestly water depends on where you buy it, you know like don't drink from the water fountain if it loses pressure when you flush the toilet. regardless DFW area is one of the largest combined cities and is roughly 120 mile circle of nothing but houses, business, and cities. as i said before several million in each dallas and fort worth and that doesn't include the surrounding cities and small towns that are on the outskirts of the county line. TONS of stuff to do here, and maybe you can cheer for the cowboys too, just kidding i know i'm going to get some static for that one. i'm not a big cowboy fan but i would like to see them win another superbowl.

I have a fellow Texan that just moved back to get away from Washington state. He's very happy to be home again. Texas is very conservative unless you live in the larger cities like DFW (God I never want to again) or Houston. The work is out there if you are willing to do it. I could do a lot more than I do right now because I live in a county that's one of the poorest in the state and I don't charge a lot. There's some good places to live but I'll tell you point blank that if you want to go to school here you're more than welcome to come down and take a look around. Waco is a nice city but I'll never live there again. I can't stand being in a big city anymore but you can live outside of DFW or Houston and drive to work. Lots of people do it so they don't have to live in the city.

I just recently spent a day in Round Rock and wouldn't mind living there. Nice little suburban setting and only about 30 minutes from the craziest street in Texas (6th Street, Austin:cool:)
