actually its worse then that.
the dogs the lapd get are not normal k-9's. I forget what the k9- cheif said exactly but they aren't German Shepards, their in that family but not the same, only in looks. They are pre trained k-9's from Europe @ the cost of between 10k and 15k. The reason for this is because the kind of training the k-9's go through is illegal in the USA. For example, keeping them in freezing weather with no cover to sleep in. Strict diets in order for max. muscle growth along with supplimented food. Also they beat the dogs into submission which is quite illegal as far as the US is concernd. Once in the US the dogs live with the officers at their home right from the moment they are bought. The k-9 cheif who told me all this said that those dogs are trained so well, that they hate normal life. Such as playing with toys at the park and going for walks. Their trained with instead of fetch the toy, they play fetch the drugs. When they first start training them, they use toys. Then after the dog gets good at finding the toy, the sub it with a tube with drugs(first the dogs learn to smell weed, then coke, then stiffer drugs) EX: they'll start with a pvc pipe the size ofa dog toy, fill it with drugs then drill big holes in the pipe so the dog can smell it. After hours of that, the sub the pvc pipe with another just w/smaller holes. They do this untill the dog can find the pipe with no holes drilled in it. And thats just the drug part of the dogs job, theres even more crazy training for assults, and hostiage situations just like in that video. That training in the video is only a small glimpse of those dogs capability. The dogs are so well trained, they actually love work. They love work more then play time only because work is play time for them. Finding the drugs is like fetching a toy to them. Each dog is only good for a max of 12-15 years if that normal is like 10years. Once its determined they can no longer work at full capability they are sold @ auction to the public.
All true, all was told to me by a K-9 master cheif, 25+ experience with k-9's. He showed me a video of all the dogs in training, it was unreal!! He blew me away with all this information. It was a rare moment, the cheif was a family friend i had over for dinner and just happend to have the dog training video in his car. I have never had the chance to sit down and "talk" to a cop off record with out fear of reaction. It was sweet!
