In my quest for speed i think i blew up my transmission:eek:

First off, my transmission has always had a nice firm 1-2 shift but the 2-3 shift lately has been very slippery (the addition of alky has not helped either:) ). one day, i was at a red light and then it turned green and i took my foot of the brake and the car did NOT nudge forward. I had to press the gas pedal and after a couple seconds it finally 'caught' and began to move. This only happened once and it was last week. Then, a couple of days ago, while crusing on the highway i noticed a small vibration. I could feel it in my seat and my first thought was the torque converter was going bad. This vibration was felt while the TQ was unlocked and locked. I blew it off thinking the vibration had always been there but still had my doubts...

Last night i took out the GN, got on a stretch of road and proceeded to accelerate. The rpms began to increase and then all of sudden it felt like the tranny was shoved into neutral and the rpms rose quickly while the car stopped accelerating. I knew at that instant the trans had gone out on me :(

I was still able to get the GN moving, it took a lot of rpms, top speed was about 40 mph, and i could hear a loud noise from the tranny while i was moving. Good thing i was only about 2 miles from home. It took alot of rpms to get it up the driveway and into the garage.

Thoughts on what happened internally?

Yup, time to pull it. Im yanking mine tonight too to change the 2nd gear band and put in a new forward drum.

Another question, since i have way more time than money should i try to tackle the rebuild myself? I have experience in engine rebuilding and can do most repairs/upgrades myself but i have NEVER torn apart a transmission...not even to change the fluid/filter. I removed them from cars plenty of times but always to take it in for a bench job...

Thoughts?

Send me a note Sal. I may be able to help since I'm just as poor as you are. Sorry to hear you're having issues again BTW.

Hey Charlie, thanks for the reply. I just checked this thread. i may call you after tomorrow. i dropped the pan and no burnt smell or metal shavings in the pan. The usual sludge but thats about it. I have feeling the Torque Converter went out on me. I bought a used restalled 2800 D5 from John (Disco Stu) for $75 and i will R&R tomorrow. i hope that is my problem. i will still need a rebuild since my 2-3 shift is lazy. This can be my quick fix for now and hopefully will not have to spend the kids x-mas money and rent money on a rebuild ;) I will just have to turn off the alky for now...NOT! i will let you know tomorrow how it goes. Thanks again for lending your ear for my GN problems!!!!

One thing i forgot to mention is when i dropped the pan, the fluid was so dark i could not see through it. I just had the fluid changed about 200 miles ago. What does that mean? It does not have any odor or smell just looks like used motor oil  Still NO metal in the fluid...

Thoughts?!

I'm working tomorrow from 11 to 6pm and 12 to close on Monday, then I'm of till Friday Sal. Take a pic of the fluid because that's not normal at all. Sounds like it got to hot but I'd need to see what it really looks like.
