well i have recently turned 18 and now my parents are going to kick me off their insurance so to speak

i have....
1987 buick regal t package V8
1984 buick grand national

just wondering if any younger folks are on their own policy and what they pay per month and what insurnace company is cheaper in general

i have had an accident 2 years ago and i know that is going to screw me over and that is my only infraction ever... was a no fault and nobody got a ticket but insurance still will probably look dimly on this

please... anybody??

i want to get some insurance quick so the folks quit yellin but dont know where to go
ill have to call in for some quotes too!

likely you'll pay more for insurance in a year than the cars are worth.......(if anyone will even write it...)

if I were you, I'd make a deal with your folks to stay on their policy and just pay them the difference...that can be done as long as you are in school...if not in school, maybe get a Civic:)

yeah that is what i want to do

but honestly... i recently got pulled over for DUI (got let off scott free) and i am usually good and rarely speeed and do anything bad... just made 1 BAD mistake... now my parents dont want to be held liable and are kicking me off... i said that i am 18 and such but they are just not wanting to understand anything!!
ahhh

you're best bet will be second line (read higher rates) companies....like Progressive..I really doubt any major Co. will insure you....you can always go to the assigned risk pool (if Mi has one)....high rates and liability coverage only, but they have to take you

i dont see how i am a high risk driver by any means.... accident 2 years ago... woo hoo happens to everyone....

geico quoted me at 1750 for 6 months!!

ouch that is pretty high
i am thinking about just having the insurance on 1 car at a time... hopefully thats legal!

Are you in school? Do you get good grades? Try State Farm, I've had them for years and never had a problem, even with making a comp, claim. My mom has worked for them for 25+ years and knows the system quite well. I don't get any "Family Member" discounts or crap like that. But since she knows the system their are tricks.

I still get my good student discount even though I graduated college in when I was 19 (24 now) They will give you the good student discounts 'til your 25. If your grades are good enough. Then they drop rates anyway.

State farm also has a multi-car discount for 2 or more cars, you'll get that too.
Do you rent a apartment or house, pay rent to the parents? Get renters insurance. I used to have that, I'd pay $3 a month for renters insurance but it would drop my monthly rate by $20 or so. Kinda cool. Now I have Homeowners Ins. it works out even better with that.

Hope this helps a little, DJ

I remember my parents being pretty anal on the insurance bit also. Realistically you Just have to wait until 25 to get a really good rate.

Try talking to your parents and working it out, this will be the only way to save the $$$ or try different relatives.

believe me, if you are 18, own hi-perf car(s!), and have a no-no on your record already, you are high risk!

prolly isn't fair, but that's life

another way to go....title the car in you and your parent's name...your existing co. will issue a second policy (at your parents' rate)

you must be a student and not all companies will co-operate

I hate to break it to you but accidents always have someone at fault. No fault refers to injuries and which company pays.

yeah i know i will be fined by the insurance pretty bad

it was icy roads and the woman in front of me slid and hit a car then i slid and hit her...

well ill just have to work a lot of overtime or sell the GN

As a parent of a 20 year old let me explain maybe why your parents would like for you to get your own insurance. When my son turned 18 we titled his car in his name and he got his own insurance because accidents happen. Well in January of this year he had an accident, which was his fault. (leaned over to pick something up off the floor, and ran a red light) There were injuries to 4 people in the other cars. (yes I said other CARS hit one in the side then hit one head on). Thanks goodness he was not hurt and none of the injuries were major. One of the people injuried required knee surgry and rehab for his knee injury. Well according to the insurance company it is possible that the injuries will exceed his medical coverage $100,000 and he will be sued for the balance. He is going to school full time and works part time so does not have a lot to lose. If his car/insurance was in my name I could lose alot more. Sorry this is so long but just wanted to put in my 2 cents worth.

oh i am sorry i wish the best for you and your son

do you know if there is a way to piggyback off of your parents insurenace and maybe get a cheaper rate
we have house insurance through AAA and car insurance and life insurance and 5 cars insured through them so i got about a 20% discount from them including good student bonus... i know if i switch companys or put it in my name... i get no bonus and get raped on the fees
