what is the best fluid to use in a liquid intercooler? is there something that would also give me freeze protection?
thanks,
mike

Liquid intercoolers for a daily driver or street car are totally impractical. Takes no time at all for the liquid to become heat soaked, and on every pass through the intercooler it's just going to get more so. There's no way to re chill the liquid on every pass before it goes back through the intercooler. At least no way that doesn't require carrying a bunch of extra cooling hardware around with you.
About the only place a liquid intercooler makes any sense at all is on a race only car.

liquid intercoolers aren't practical in our vehicals because the
coolest possible air going though them would be engine
operating temp. air to air intercoolers are more practical
and cost less.

Guys, he didn't ask what you think of the intercooler. He asked what to use in one. In this, one would assume he already has one. Maybe he inherited it? Whatever, why bash the heck out of it?? You took the time to write all the jiberish of your opinion without helping this guy. Pisses me off!

whitecar - Summer - I'd suggest distilled water and about 2oz of RMI25 and a bottle of Redline's Water Wetter. I've run this stuff(WaterWetter) for 8 years with no problems. You can get it at PepBoys. Winter - I'd suggest draining about half the liquid and replace with antifreeze. Good luck!

No need to use WW, as RMI contains a surficant.

Not streetable? I drove mine from Reno to Denver. I had an in line trans cooler to help cool the water. I used nothing but water.

yeah but...

don't you feel stupid...it's not what everyone else does:rolleyes:
Conform or be an outcast!:p

And this kept the intercooler water at what temperature?

I would like to point out that the Syclone and Typhoon both use a air to water heat exchanger and those are obviously streetable vehicles.

The efficiency of the exchanger is really the issue that you bring up, Turbodave. The question that you need to answer is if the lower delta T in an air to water intercooler is offset by increased efficiency in heat transfer.

Air to air heat exchangers will have a higher delta T but a lower efficiency (air doesn't conduct heat as well as water).

Oh yeah, I agree with the previous suggestions about water and WW or RMI too!

yes i did inherit the car. my uncle pruchased the tta from atr when they finished using it as the test car. he built it as a race car, it has the liquid intercooler that runs to a custom ice box that cools the water. i have rmi-25 which i am using in the radiator, but i just wanted to make sure it was ok to use a slight amount of antifreeze in the winter.
thanks

To keep it from freezing in the winter just drain about 1/2 of the distilled water and water wetter mix out and replace with anti freeze. Save the dist water/water wetter in a container to put in when it warms up and you remove the anti freeze as that water wetter stuff is EXPENSIVE.

My sy stays in the garage and I drain the IC but other syty ppl that still use the W/A and drive year round do the above or run a mix of anti freeze, water wetter, distilled water year round.

Geez you guys!

I encouraged Mike (whitecar) to post his question on this website because it's usually very helpful. Thanks for the useful info Nick, Warp6, TwoLane, TurboDave231 & myclone.

Mike inherited a beautiful TTA that's been handcrafted for serious racing. He's starting from the basics but is very willing and quick to learn.

Let's lead by example here and show Mike what "fast with class" is all about.

I agree. I hate when someone starts bashing stuff before they know the details. I'd love to have a liquid intercooler to play with. I'd ice that puppy down and go trolling for Mustangs! Sounds like a cool car. Have whitecar come to High Point sometime so I can knock him off! ;)

Air-to-Water exchanger

I agree with that, but the air-to-water exchanger are also 1/2 the size of the Air-to-Air exchangers on the GNs. I am really surprised that none of the vendors have come up with a stock location Air to Water intercooler setup for our GN's; with the Syclone and Typhoon setup in mind:rolleyes:. The setup on those trucks work great, why wouldn't it work on our cars .

call ATR, they have exactly what you are looking for (if you care to part with $2K.....)

that said, if a car has one installed, it would be a very nice advantage at the race track if you can keep it cool

If this is it http://www.atrperformance.com/catalog/02atr024.PDF and it is set up like the ones on the Syclone/Typhoon then it should be fine.:D It is just a little over priced:eek: !!!!!

Woody,

Up here in the north (michigan) we get alot of crazy guys running snowmobiles at the drag strip and they are flat FAST!!! Stockers will run low 10's easy.

One of the interesting things they use is a "Pit cooler" which is nothing more than a huge ice chest full of water and ice. A couple of quick connect hoses and an electric pump gets these sleds cold before the next pass.

A Race only GN could use this type setup and really keep inlet temps down. Other turbo cars (NMCA Mustangs) use this to a great advantage. I am not sure I would want a liquid intercooler for the street, but for a race only application, That would be the ticket!! Anybody got one to sell cheap???

shoot, you guys have colder air in the dead of summer than we ever see! I would just once like to run my car in some sub 60* air to see what would happen!

even your old stompin' grounds (Sandyeggo) is better than us!

COLD AIR ? What is that?

My GN has never seen cold air. At least in AZ you have air. Here in South FL I had to transform my GN into a fish so I could drive it with this 100% humidity ;) .
