I'm in the process of trying to get prices on a built shortblock and was wondering what is reasonable. I'm thinking of purchasing a Level 3 Gurdled shortblock from Grooms Engines and I was quoted $3295 with exchange. I hope they only mean a shortblock exchange because my heads are VPE Stage 3 P&P and in the intake is powder coated black and ported. Anyway, because I did something stupid, I need to buy a new shortblock. Where is the best place to get one that comes ready for me to just bolt on the heads, intake, pan, waterpump, etc. I would like it to come with forged pistons, gurdle, oil pump, cam & timing chain.

On the East Coast I would check out Bill Anderson or RPE. I never heard of Groom's. Not saying there are bad. But if Iwas buying a Buick shortblock, I would buy from the known Buick experts. I have heard of a lot of problems with rebuilds that come from relatively unknown builders. $3,000-$4,000 is about right for a good shortblock.

Thanks for the responses. I will set aside about 5K for everything including an engine stand and hoist.

Call Jack Cotton in Mass. He can fix you up with a great short block.
