Ok...here's the story....
This guy buys junk cars and parts them out. He's mostly into Cavaliers and Sunfires as he runs them in circle track, but this time he acquired a Dodge Intrepid with a knocking engine, and advertised it for parts online.
I drive out to this guys house which is out in the country. I called him an hour before hand and told him I wanted the fan, to which he said he'd start pulling it for me. If you've ever seen how the fans are installed on the radiator on a 2000 Intrepid, you know it's pretty much a must to remove the radiator.
The radiator is held in the core support by an upper radiator support, which is bolted to the core support. I get there and instead of unbolting the upper radiator support, this guy is bending it back and forth hoping to get it off. Mind you I have never touched an intrepid to this day, but I mentioned to him about "maybe if we remove these 4 bolts..." to which he agreed....and in a matter of minutes, the upper radiator support was out of the way and we had far more access to the radiator.
Now after this, the guy grabs his wrench and starts removing both of the refrigerant lines that feed into the condenser. I said to him "are you sure the refrigerant has been recovered", to which he said "well the guy I got this car from told me the a/c didn't work". I left it at that. Soon afterwards he quit wrenching on the lines.
Next was the removal of the hoses, and then it was time to wrestle out the radiator. Him on the passenger side, me on the driver side.
PPPSSSSHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Right as we began to pull up the radiator, both of the refrigerant lines (that he had been wrenching on) came loose from the condenser and the both of us ran in opposite directions as a cloud of R134a under pressure went soaring into the sky. I'm sure old boy had to change his drawers after that one, but hopefully he'll be reminded when working on refrigeration systems, to always ensure there's no pressure in the system.
After we laughed it off, we removed the 4 bolts holding the fan to the radiator, I paid the man his $20 and took my fans home.
BTW the fans work great, can't wait to do the install on the Buick and see how much cooler it keeps the car with it's stock radiator.
