Well its been over a month now and I havent been able to drive my car. At first it was blowing the ecm fuse...I replaced it with a bigger amp fuse and drove it home. After that it wouldnt start again so I started buying parts people sugguested...coil pack, ignition module, and a cam sensor cap...The car still wont start and I have noe clue whats going on. It has to be something electrical, its not getting spark...Could it be the caspers 84/87 wire harness adapter went bad on me? I dunno any ideas would be apperciated...thanks

well i would think the ECM. you had a problem with it blowing a fuse. you decided to put a bigger fuse in it (not a good idea) you got it home but it probley fried the computer. i have a extra 84-85 ecm if it comes to be the problem. there is no reason to change the fuse there is somthing wrong that needs to be tracked down. sorry i couldnt help more but i do have a good ecm if need be. hopefully someone has some more input for you but i would start there first.

I agree with BOOST231. I suspect the ECM as well. I highly doubt that it is the Caspers 84-87 IGN adapter. You really need a good 84/85 ECM to swap out. Unfortunately, I do not have one. Brad

I have an extra 87 computer so i went and plugged that in and its still a no go...I probably fried the harness somewhere maybe??

Your problem

Make sure that your fusible links are not fried. These are ment to fry before anything else gets fried and will not let you get power to your ecu. You might want to light test at ecu to be sure there is power. And never put a higher amp fuse in place of original rating.

Well i used a test light at the ecm fuseable link and it lit up at both ends so....Any other ideas?

wire harness question

caspers has a wire harness adapter to plug 84 engine harness to an 87 ecm?

where are you located? maybe there is someone around your area that can come by and help

What about all the pins in the 2 wire connectors that go into the ECM? None of them are bent? or have pulled out a little inside the jacks? I'd do a good visual check of all those wires right there in that little kickpanel and glove box area and make sure none are loose, disconnected, and no kinks or insulation rubbed away. Especially where the wire bundle does a 90 degree bend over the top of computer. Some previous owners may not have been so careful when removing/installing ECM.

Check under the hood where the ECM power wire snakes up over the fender well to that connector near pos battery terminal. Make sure its not been caught/crimped on something, or insulation damaged and grounding to something. Also check the wires at that connector and make sure their not corroded inside that connecting jack.

like slow84gn, I'm curious what you mean by caspers 84/7 harness adapter.

this cant be to hard to figure out. i really need to look at it and i could figure it out. one is the 87 ecm you used in good working order? did you use a chip that was made for the 87 ecm for a hotair or did you put you hotair chip in it. Is the car cranking over? do you have fuel pressure? you said you dont have spark how did you determin this? have you test the coil pack to see if its bad? we need more help here. the ecm in these cars are pretty damn tuff it would take alot to fry one.

The adapter i am refering to is the ignition module adapter...Ill check the ecm wires again but im sure they were good. I live in the seattle area, if anyone could come out that would be awesome.

can you answer some of my question in the above post this will let me know more info so i can help you out.

The 87 computer is good...stock chip...car is cranking...have fuel pressure...Its a brand new coilpack, ignigtion module, and cam sensor cap...My mechanic said i wasnt getting spark...I think that was all your questions

not sure how well a stock 84-85 chip is going to work in a 87 computer. might want to look into that and also you might want to check for sure if there is spark out not. i never trust anyone i always have to see for myself.

Without your exact mods listed, its kind of confusing for me. I know its frustrating, but lets make sure we're all clear so we can try and make some progress.

You have basically stock car, with 86/7 coil pack and ignition module with caspers wiring adapter. You have 84/5 ecm with stock chip and prom, and everything seems to be in check except no spark at the plugs. Is this correct?

I agree with boost231. I'd feel better if I pulled the plugs and grounded each one on the block or header while cranking and make sure you are indeed not getting spark. (if you got a timing light/gun, hook it up to each plug wire and crank engine while pulling the trigger) If indeed no spark, then we can back track through the system.
(I assume that all your plugs and wires are good and not corroded, cracked, etc.)

Also, if you haven't reinstalled the correct amp rating fuse yet, do that first. otherwise, your asking for trouble
