My friend needs a new 2004R to replace his worn out unit. He would like to find a builder in the Phoenix area that is experienced with making the 2004R perform correctly and be durable. Any recommedations? He would also consider buying out of state as long as it fits into his budget, but shipping would have to be reasonable and with no core to return. He is looking to spend about a grand max. It doesn't have to be a full race trans, but it does need to support a 5.3 L33 Vortec with a 226/238 cam. Engine probably has 380-400 hp and about 380ft/lbs torque at 4500rpm. Car is a 1964 Jetstar 88 and weighs about 4200lbs and has 3.90 gears. Any recommedations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Nick micale would be the guy to see. Www.arizonagn.com give him a call. If he doesn't answer leave a message or pm him on the board

He better start looking for a used unit since it will be a $400 core from any of the reputable builders. I doubt anyone will do anything for $600

Why would it be a $400 core?

I sell a base model (no billet except in some cases a servo) for a bit over $1000.

No reason for it to be a GN core or even a MCSS.

I've been putting them together for retrofits with MCSS VB and Gov, or the KC, CR, and AA valve bodies and getting 5K-6K shifts depending on the combo.

I have plenty of the valve bodies though.

When I said no core, I was meaning that he doesn't want to have to pay to send a core back to someplace out of state. He already has a KC trans in the car. It already has a billet servo, Transgo shift kit and GN governor. All of these parts were installed into KC trans in a 75K mile 1986 307 Cutlass. When that car was sold the trans was pulled and installed into the 64 Jetstar with a healthy 403 olds. The trans had about 12,000 miles on it with the mods and performed great when it was pulled out of the Cutlass and installed into the Jetstar. I was amazed at the fact that after 12k miles there was no hint of debris or clutch material in the pan. Very clean. The extra torque of the 403 I believe took out the remaining life that was in the trans. It was only used for 1,000 miles with the 403 when that engine was pulled and the 5.3 Vortec installed. 500 miles on that engine and now the trans shifts way too early, too soft and there were large chunks of clutch material in the pan and filter. I'm no expert, but due to the thickness of this clutch material, I think something fragged. Besides the large chunks the fluid looked dark and had somewhat of a sludge consistency. The trans probably has roughly 90K on the OEM clutches and band so a rebuild is due.

Also, he would consider a used unit as long as it is in good condition and was built accordingly to begin with. No stock used units in other words. He doesn't mind parting with his grand for the right transmission. He just hasn't had good luck in the past with automatics and doesn't want to get screwed again. Thats why I'm trying to help him out and why I came here to the 2004R experts.

Just remember when the transmission last 6 months he got his 1k $ worth of 2004r:cool:
