I am new to the GN, I have been looking at a 87 gn for $17000. It has a rear main seal leak. Is this common on the GN?

Yes, and for that matter common to any 20+ year old American car.

Easy fix. Is that all that's wrong?

Very common and an easy fix. Bought mine and it had less than 5000 miles on it and as soon as I started driving it the rear main started leaking.

Yes... Post details though. $17k is alot unless she is a low mile car...

Yep..

for that kind of $$, the seller should be fixing everything that's wrong.
Maybe, get a second opinion, from someone that's has/had experience w/ the TR...

not generally an issue.......

in 22 years of working on T-R's, I have found very few rear main seals leaking.:)

The majority of the time it is the valve covers, or an issue around the oil filter/cooler adapter, or the oil pan gasket.

The oil runs to the rear of the engine, and drips out the flexplate cover.

Best way to check for a rear main leak is to remove this cover and check for oil "tracking" on the flexplate from the crank.

kirban 2 cents worth

Looking at it from a humorous stand point, one reason turbo owners usually do not have concrete driveways. Nicks answers are rite on usually see oil dripping around back of engine near starter etc as heat and age has killed valve cover gaskets and the like.

At 17 grand you need to look at other factors to determine if the car is worth 17 grand. You could spend a month of sundays looking for one in any price range that didn't drip some oil at some point.

I just keep a metal cookie pan with 3/4in of kitty litter(preferably fresh)under my parking spot.

In todays economy that must be a pretty low mile car:cool:

My last 87 GN, a 7K mile car, leaked from the rear main seal, size of a 1 gal coffee can, why they leak? Crank flexing do to boost along with a cast crank. My fix was to install a Sabo Neoprene seal, it never leaked again, my built engine had the same seal installed and saw 25 + lbs of boost, no leaks from there. I bought a dye system leak detector that works on oil, coolant, and other oils. Yes leaks can come from other places like mentioned so have it checked out before replacing anything. Eastwood and Others sell such a dye check system. This is my experience with my car only and not intended to criticise anyone else. Good Luck on your Purchase. Gene
