Need help fast

I just put the trans back together and found a 2"x1/4" pin in the tub we had under the car to catch the fluid. I went to the local tranny shop to ask what the heck it was for. He said it looks like an accumulater pin. I know when I put the 3-4 accumulator in using Bruce's instructions (piston first then spring then sep plate) that I didn't have a pin in there. Can you tell me if it needs the pin when put together that way?
